Rose Markgraf, 83, of Buffalo Lake, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Hutchinson Community Hospital.
Rose Mary Markgraf was born January 12, 1920, in Las Animas, Colo., the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Etzel) Suppes.
She was baptized in Las Animas and later confirmed in the Catholic faith. Rose grew up in Minnesota.
On November 27, 1940, Rose was united in marriage to Carl F. Markgraf at St. John's Catholic Church in Hector. Their marriage was blessed with nine children.
The couple lived and farmed north of Buffalo Lake. An active farm wife, Rose also raised chickens. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. Rose was active with the Boon Lake Ladies Aid, and also the Christian Mothers Society.
Always willing to serve others, she enjoyed cooking for visitors and working crews. Gardening, quilting, puzzles, cleaning, and traveling were among her favorite things to do. Rose loved her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl; sons Gene Markgraf and Bruce Markgraf; sisters Esther Suppes, Jane Richardson, and Mary Quinn, and three sisters in infancy; brothers George Suppes, Peter Suppes, Jacob Suppes, Leonard Suppes, John Suppes, and one brother in infancy.
Rose is survived by her children Edward (Pat) Markgraf of Hutchinson, Robert (Judy) Markgraf of Watkins, James Markgraf of Hector, Karen (Jerry) Swenson of Hutchinson, Carl J. (Trish) Markgraf of Arvada, Colo., Lynette (David) Rosenau of Lester Prairie, and Steven (Peg) Markgraf of Watertown;
Rose is further survived by daughters-in-law Vikki Markgraf of Erie, Colo., and Darlyn Markgraf of Buffalo Lake; 37 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; brother Joseph Suppes of Silver Springs, Fla.; twin sister Katherine Marquardt of Grinnell, Iowa;
She is also survived by brothers-in-law William Markgraf of Stewart, and LeRoy Markgraf of Buffalo Lake; sisters-in-law: Molly (Otto) Ahlbrecht of Hector, Gladys Markgraf of Buffalo Lake, Sylvia Markgraf of Stewart, and Sue Markgraf of Buffalo Lake; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Friday, Dec. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hughes Funeral Home in Stewart, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and continued one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.
The Raymond D. Hughes Funeral Homes of Hector served the family.
