Veldora Olga Mathews, 72
Veldora Olga Mathews entered her eternal rest at the St. Mary's Care Center in Winsted at the age of 72 years, 1 month, and 24 days.
Veldora was born the daughter of William and Agnes (Hecksel) Birkholz May 6, 1931 in rural Lester Prairie.
She was baptized at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie May 25, 1931 by the Rev. P. Eckert.
As a child, Veldora's family moved to Watertown. She was confirmed in the faith March 25, 1945 at the St. Peter Lutheran Church of Watertown by the Rev. W. Stellwagon. Veldora attended country school close to her home.
Veldora was united in marriage with Norman Mathews at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Watertown Nov. 4, 1951 by the Rev. J. Spomer.
The couple has made their home west of Glencoe where they have operated a farm. Veldora has been a member of the Ladies Aid at First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening, bird watching, and the outdoors. Veldora especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Veldora is survived by her husband Norman Mathews of Glencoe, 4 children Donald Mathews (Julie) of Willmar, Virgil Mathews (Lynn) of Glencoe, Janice Mathews of Glencoe, and Daniel Mathews (Cindy) of Glencoe.
She is further survived by nine grandchildren Jon Mathews (Sarah), Michael Mathews (Erica), Andrew Mathews, Shannon Alsleben (Ryan), Shauna Gruber (Matt), Shandon Mathews, Cole Mathews, Morgan Mathews, Madison Mathews; and great-grandchild Jayden Alsleben.
Veldora is also survived by three sisters Leola Schmidt (Roylan) of Watertown, Glendora Erhke (Edmund) of Plato, Arsylvia Radtke (Jon) of Hutchinson; brother Kienhard Birkholz (Sue) of Jordan, brothers-in-law and sisters in law Lorna Ehrke of Plato, Raymond and Willardine Mathews of Smithton, Mo., Myrtle Mathews of Glencoe, Anna Mathews of Glencoe; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Visitation was Wednesday evening, July 2, 2003 at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Veldora Mathews were at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2003 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Officiating was the Rev. Ron Mathison.
The organist was Dawn Wolter. The congregational hymns were "Nearer My God to Thee," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and "How Great Thou Art."
Serving as casket bearers were Russell Victorian, Eugene Ehrke, Larry Schmidt, Jim Birkholz, Charles Mathews, and Rodney Mathews.
Interment was in the First Lutheran Cemetery.
