Fred Richard Schendel obituary, 7/12/2003


Fred Richard Schendel, age 86, of Cokato, formerly of Woodland
Township, died Saturday, July 12, 2003.
Fred was born Feb. 8, 1917 in Hanover the son of Fred and
Bertha Bechtold Schendel.
He was baptized April 2, 1917 in Hanover by the Rev. W.
Beieswanger. He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed
in the Christian faith April 13, 1930 by the Rev. C.G. Seltz.
He attended country school in Woodland Township and two
years at St. James Lutheran School, graduating from eighth grade in 1930.
He was a long-time member of St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake.
Fred was united in marriage to Frieda Mahron Aug. 26, 1942
at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Annandale by the Rev. J. H. Klausmeier.
This union was blessed with the births of two sons.
Fred and Frieda made their home on the Schendel family
farm, southeast of Howard Lake. His wife died Nov. 30, 1967.
Fred then worked for Sterner Zimmermann in Winsted assembling
machinery. He enjoyed antique machinery shows and parades.
Fred lived near his son and helped with farm work until
he suffered a stroke in 1997. He then lived at Park View Care Center in
Buffalo, and later at Cokato Manor.
In addition to his wife, Fred was preceded in death by
his parents Fred and Bertha Schendel, brothers Gilbert, Alvin, Roy, and
Arthur, sisters Lillian Johnson, Alma Engel, Elda Engel, and Mabel Mahlstedt,
sisters-in-law Irene Schendel and Ruth Strohschein, and by great granddaughter
Geneva Fasching.
Fred is survived by Bob and Doris Schendel of Waverly,
and Don and Linda Schendel of Polk, Ohio; grandchildren Julie (Terry) Fasching,
Jon (Jody) Schendel, Jennifer (Jason) McElvain, Jim (Amy) Schendel, and
Jeff (Talisa) Schendel
Fred is further survived by six great grandchildren, a
sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bess and Al Strohschein of Howard Lake;
cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends called Tuesday, July 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the
Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. A prayer service was at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services for Fred Schendel were Wednesday, July
16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake. The Rev. Michael
Nirva and the Rev. Martin Schoenfeld officiated.
Interment followed at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
The organist was Nancy Butterfass. “Open Now Thy Gates
of Beauty,” “Jerusalem, My Happy Home,” “Nearer, My
God, to Thee,” and “I’m But a Stranger Here” were sung as
congregational hymns.
Casket bearers were Jon, Jeff, Jim, and Amy Schendel, and
Julie and Terry Fasching.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
