Rodney Henry Slanga
Former resident of Lester Prairie, Rodney Henry Slanga,
age 71, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at his Albany, Ore., home.
Rodney was born in Lester Prairie, Winsted Township, to
Henry Conrad and Malinda Claire Slanga.
He graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1950.
He apprenticed to a printer and learned his trade in a
job shop and small town newspaper, operating a linotype.
He moved to Springfield, Ore., and worked for the Springfield
News for several years. He attended a Lutheran church and married Ida Lanora
Williams there July 25, 1958.
Rodney lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 1960 to 1961, then
went to Plainfield, Vt. for eight years, working for Capital City Press.
A son, Todd Alan was born there. The family returned to
Oregon in 1969, living briefly in Myrtle Point, Ore., then moved to Albany
in 1970 where he worked for Albany Printing until he retired, except for
two years when he joined the printing staff of Van Dahl Publications which
produced The Stamp Collector newspaper.
His hobbies and interests included photography, gardening,
growing bonsai miniature trees, collecting music from the ’50s and ’60s,
and reading, especially about current events and little known facts.
A self-styled lovable curmudgeon, he enjoyed his many friends
and two grandchildren, and was well-known for an off-beat, quirky sense
of humor.
Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant son,
Eric William.
Survivors include his wife, Lanora and son, Todd of Albany;
brothers Dr. Roger Slanga of Longville, Minn., James W. Slanga of Sun City
West, Ariz., and Steve Slanga of Winter, Wis.; sisters Diane Rossi of Minneapolis
and Patti Speak of St. Bonifacius; two granddaughters, and several nieces
and nephews.
Disposition will be by cremation; and at his request, no
funeral or memorial service will take place.
Instead, his family hosted a gathering of friends to celebrate
his life with an emphasis on the funny memories they could recall May 24
from noon to 4 p.m. at Millersburg City Hall in Oregon.
Contributions in Rodney Slanga’s name may be made to Samaritan
Evergreen Hospice, 1046 6th Avenue SW, Albany, OR 97321.
