Dorothy Martha Emily Baird
Dorothy Martha Emily (Ogitzak) Gatz Baird, age 85 of Winsted, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 21, 2004 at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
She was born Aug. 11, 1919 in Lyndale, the daughter of Samuel and Anna Zuehl Ogitzak. Dorothy was baptized Sept. 14, 1919 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood, Carver County. She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith May 20, 1934 at Stockholm Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, Wright County.
Dorothy and Glenard E. Gatz were joined in holy marriage June 7, 1939 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood Township. To this union, two children were born, Paul and Paulette.
Glenard preceded his wife in death March 4, 1985.
Dorothy enjoyed her family and friends. Her love for gardening, embroidery, quilting, and cooking were her gifts to many and enjoyed by all.
She was a faithful member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted. Through the years, Dorothy was very active in many church activities. She did janitorial work at St. John’s from 1973 until 1990. Dorothy was also chairwoman of the altar guild, an AAL officer, an active member of the Ladies Guild and its funeral committee chairman. She was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Auxiliary. Dorothy also belonged to The Farm Bureau.
Dorothy and James G. Baird Sr. were joined in holy marriage Nov. 19, 1989, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted.
James Baird Sr. preceded his wife in death Feb. 28, 1998.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children, Paul (Marilyn) Gatz of Winsted, and Paulette (Dean) Jopp of Mayer; five grandchildren: Kay (Mark) Knutson of Edina, Steve (Donna) Gatz of Howard Lake, Bruce (Lissa) Gatz of Winsted, Nathan (Kim) Jopp of Mayer, and Tracy (Shawn) Bates of Buffalo; great-grandchildren Amanda Knutson; Laura, Krystal, Brandon, Bailey and Heather Gatz; Sam and Andrew Gatz, and Adler Jopp.
In addition, Dorothy is survived by her sisters Anne Brunberg, Adeline Lindstrom, and Marcella Mikesh; sisters-in-law Alma Ogitzak, Ethel Ogitzak, Elaine Gatz, and Viola Schauer; other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husbands, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Anna Ogitzak; a granddaughter, Joanne Gatz; brothers Clarence, Marvin, and Henry Ogitzak; brothers-in-law Art Lindstrom, Harold Brunberg, Myron Mikesh, Norman Gatz, and Martin Schauer; and by a sister-inlaw, Gertrude Ogitzak.
Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 24 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted. Pastor Gerald L. Boldt officiated. Kay Knutson was the organist for the funeral service. Paul and Bruce Gatz were the vocalists.Interment followed at the Winsted public cemetery.
Friends called Thursday, Dec. 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. A prayer service took place at 7 p.m.
Casket bearers were Brandon Gatz, Gary and Ron Schauer, Brad Mikesh, Bill Braunswarth, and Ken Zimmerman.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
