Lydia W. Dammann
Funeral services celebrating the life of Lydia W. Dammann, age 97 of Glencoe, and formerly of Lester Prairie, were Tuesday, July 6, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Lester Prairie. Lydia died Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services long term care unit.
Lydia Wilhelmine (Engelke) Dammann was born the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Lustman) Engelke June 4, 1907, in Helen Township of McLeod County. She was baptized shortly after birth by the Rev. Pfotenhauer of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hamburg.
Lydia attended the Emanuel Lutheran Parochial School.
She was united in marriage to William H. Dammann April 29, 1928, at Emanuel Lutheran by the Rev. H. J. Bouman. Two sons were born to this union: Earl and Chester.
The couple made their home on a farm in Bergen Township, rural Lester Prairie.
After William’s death in July of 1988, Lydia moved to a home in Glencoe. In the fall of 1993, she moved to an apartment in Millie Beneke Manor, where she lived until February 2001, when she became a resident of the long term care unit at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Lydia was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, belonging to the church choir and Ladies Aid. She loved to sew, bake, and cook.
She also loved being with her family. There was a wonderful relationship between Lydia and her sisters, and they would do almost everything together.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandchild, Tricia Dammann; and a great-grandchild, Benjamin Dammann.
She is survived by her sons: Earl Dammann (wife: Aileene) of Glencoe, and Chester Dammann (wife: Doris) of Lester Prairie; grandchildren, Connie Pautz (husband: Jim), and Karen Bielke (husband: Bruce), all of Glencoe; Randy Dammann (wife: Beth), and Kerry Dammann, all of Hutchinson, and Ryan Dammann (wife: Joann), also of Glencoe.
Lydia is further survived by great-grandchildren: Calla, Kelsey and Jorrin Pautz; Danielle and Bennett Bielke; Andrew, Michael, and Bradley Dammann; and Olivia Dammann; sisters Esther Harms and Emma Voight, both of Glencoe; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Arnold and Clara Dammann of Lester Prairie; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
The Rev. Gerald Schwanke officiated at the 11 a.m. funeral service. The organist was Mary Mielke. Congregational hymns were “I’m But A Stranger Here,” “Just As I Am,” “Lift High The Cross,” and “Amazing Grace.”
Serving as casketbearers were Gerald Engelke, Frederick Harms, Ralph Voight, Edward Dammann, Donald Dammann, and Milan Dammann. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Monday, July 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
