Marianne Martha Dittmer
Funeral services celebrating the life of Marianne Martha (Engelmann) Dittmer, age 57 of Plato, were Wednesday, Sept. 15 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Helen Township. Marianne died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 10, 2004 at her home.
Marianne was born Feb. 26, 1947 in Glencoe, the daughter of Elmer and Norma (Panning) Engelmann. She was baptized March 16, 1947 by the Rev. R. L. Ehlen at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Plato; and confirmed by the Rev. E. F. Schroeder at the same church March 26, 1961.
She grew up north of Plato on the family farm, attending St. John’s Parochial School through the eighth grade. After graduation from Glencoe High School in 1965, Marianne continued her schooling at Mankato Commercial College.
Marianne was united in marriage to Dennis Dittmer May 25, 1974 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Plato, by the Rev. B. Klein. The couple resided in Plato their entire married life.
Marianne was an employee of Lester Building Systems from 1967 to the time of her death. She was on the Plato building and zoning committee and an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helen Township, where she served on the altar committee.
Her hobbies included following her sons’ activities, both in and out of school; traveling, reading, quilting, and baking.
Marianne was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Elmer Dittmer; and two brothers, Harlan Engelmann and Wallace Engelmann.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; two sons, Daniel D. Dittmer of Shakopee, and Bryan W. Dittmer of Glencoe; her parents, Elmer and Norma Engelmann of Plato; mother-in-law Elva Dittmer of Arlington; a brother, Roger Engelmann (wife Peggy) of Plato; and four sisters: Linda Bierstedt (husband Gary) of Norwood Young America, Nancy Birkholz (husband Robert) of Lester Prairie, Karen Mathews (husband Bill) of Hutchinson, and Jane Roth (husband Larry) of Lester Prairie.
She is further survived by sister-in-law Betty Ann Engelmann of Plymouth, fifteen nieces and nephews: Teresa Engelmann, Christopher Engelmann, Joshua Engelmann, Bradley Bierstedt, Erin Bierstedt, Adam Birkholz, Heather Birkholz, Jennifer Mathews, Joseph Mathews, Katrina Mathews, Zachary Roth, Jacob Roth, Michell Roth, Sarah Engelmann, and Mark Engelmann; as well as other relatives and friends.
The Rev. Dennis Reichow officiated at the 11 a.m. funeral service. The organist was Christy Ittel and the congregation sang “How Great Thou Art,” “I’m But A Stranger Here,” and “Abide With Me.” Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday evening, Sept. 14, at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Casket bearers were Christopher Engelmann, Joshua Engelmann, Adam Birkholz, Bradley Bierstedt, Joseph Mathews, and Larry Roth.
The Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe handled the arrangements.
