Hilda Anna Dose, 92
Hilda Anna Dose of Lester Prairie died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at Glencoe Regional Health Services at the age of 92 years, four months, and two days.
Hilda was born the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Bachman) Kroells Sept. 29, 1911 in Young America.
She was baptized Oct. 29, 1911 at the Evangelical Church in Norwood by the Rev. Paul Quarden. Soon after that, the family moved to a farm north of Young America. In 1917 they bought a farm two miles north of Lester Prairie.
Hilda attended a one-room school northeast of Lester Prairie, where she remembered hitting the ball over the fence. It was an out and not a homerun. She spoke more German than English when she started school, so the teacher would talk German with her during recess.
Hilda was confirmed into the faith March 28, 1926 at the Evangelical Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. H. B. Witzke. She has been a member of the church for more than 86 years.
In her teens Hilda worked for Mr. and Mrs. William Kroells near Hamburg, and also for Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fruetel in Lester Prairie.
Hilda was united in marriage to Walter Dose June 10, 1931 at the Evangelical Church in Lester Prairie by Rev. E. Becker. The reception was in the newly built barn on the Dose family farm two miles southwest of Lester Prairie, which the couple rented for nearly six years.
In 1937 they bought a farm two miles southeast of Lester Prairie where Hilda continued to live after Walter died in 1993. Hilda and Walter were married for 62 years.
Hilda loved to be in her garden and was noted for her canned dill pickles. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and working on jigsaw puzzels. Hilda was an avid Twins fan, watching or listening to the games. She would keep account of the final scores and mark the wins in ink and the losses in pencil.
She eschewed some modern conveniences like refusing to get a microwave and doing her laundry with a wringer washer. As recently as last fall, Hilda mowed the lawn with a riding mower, drove to town, and worked in her garden.
Hilda is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, brother and sister-in-law Melvin and Dorothy Kroells, brothers-in-law Roland Zuehl, Elroy Wendorf, William Trocke, Vernon Jans, Henry Dose, and Herbert Dose, and sister-in-law Gladys Grimm.
She is survived by her son Emmert (Carol) Dose of Racine, Wis., grandsons Christopher Dose, Jonathan (Kari) Dose, and Jeffery Dose, all of Racine, Wis.; great grandson Justin Dose, sisters Ella Zuehl and Eveline Wendorf of Lester Prairie, and Marcella Jans of Annandale; sister-in-law Eleanora (Dose) Kuenzel of El Cajon, Calif, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
