Donald Theodore Kowalke
Donald Theodore Kowalke, age 71 of rural Montrose, Woodland Township, died Monday evening, April 26, 2004 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Dec. 29, 1932 in Minneapolis, the son of Ted and Hilda (Hoppe) Kowalke.
Donald was baptized March 5, 1933 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown Township, Carver County. He was also instructed in the Lutheran catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith June 15, 1947 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose by the Rev. C. Luecker. His confirmation memory verse was Romans 1 : 16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
He honorably served his country in the United States Army.
Donald and Marie C. Bokusky were joined in holy marriage June 1, 1963 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Delano. God blessed their marriage with six children.
Donald engaged in farming his entire life. He enjoyed playing cards.
He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marie C. Kowalke; children: Patrick Kowalke of Montrose, Charlene (Mike) Mengelkoch of Annandale, Robert Kowalke of Montrose, Judy (Kevin) Hierlmaier of Hutchinson and Michael (Shondell) Kowalke of Howard Lake; 11 grandchildren: Sheila, Jesse and Jason; Teigan, Resche, Shane, Mitchell and Zachary; and Shane, Alexandrea and Thaddius; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Kowalke; his parents, Ted and Hilda Kowalke; brothers, Raymond and Clayton Kowalke; an infant brother and an infant sister.
Funeral services were Thursday, April 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose. The Rev. Robert J. Hellmann officiated and interment followed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Amy Smith was the organist for the funeral service. Congregational hymns were “When My Last Hour is Close at Hand,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and “ On Eagles’ Wings.”
Friends called at the church April 29 from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
Honorary casket bearers were Leo Salonek, Leo Neaton, Donald Blackketter, Leo Blackketter, Jeff Meuleners, and Leander Meuleners.
Casket bearers were Ted Salonek, Roger Beiersdorf, LeRoy Kowalke, Tim Kowalke, Bill Kowalke, and Louie Bokusky.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
