Sophie E. Litfin, 10/19/04


Sophie E. Litfin, age 97, of Winsted, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at St. Mary’s Care Center.
She was born April 30, 1907 in Winsted the daughter of Wilfred and Bertha (Ulrick) Deidrick.
Sophie Deidrick and August A. “Spitz” Litfin, were joined in holy marriage November 21, 1927, at the Holy Trinity parish house by Father Smalley. God blessed their marriage with four children.
The couple was married for 70-plus years when “Spitz” passed away August 30, 1999.
Sophie and “Spitz” settled in Winsted and started their life together a few short year before the stock market crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression struck.
Sophie tended to the family at home. Even during the Depression, Sophie kept the family well fed. She would can 500 quarts of vegetables and meats each year and she also raised a large garden.
At that time, animals were allowed in the city limits of Winsted and they raised chickens and pigs.
The couple bought their first house in 1936 and sold it in 1938 and built a house.
Sophie was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted and also belonged to CCW.
Sophie is survived by grandchildrenL Doug Robison and Barb Robison both of Winsted, Patricia (Larry) DeWitt of Hutchinson, Mary (Steve) Paschke of Watertown, Carol Schwanke of Glencoe, Cynthia (Dan) Noga of Hutchinson, and Julie Fratzke of Eau Claire, Wis.; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren, a son-in-law: David Fratzke of Hutchinson; a niece, two nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by Husband: August A. “Spitz” Litfin, Parents: Wilfred and Bertha Deidrick; children: Germaine and Marlin Litfin, Arlene Robison, Charmaine Fratzke, son-in-law Frank Robison, and a sister, Anna Habisch.
