Donald O. 'Don' Mellin
Donald O. "Don" Mellin, age 73 of Cambridge, died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Cambridge while removing snow in Pine Village Trailer Park.
Don was born June 28, 1930, in Howard Lake, to Oscar and Florence (McGarvie) Mellin. The family moved to Cambridge about 1940, where they bought a farm in Bradford Township.
Don attended country school through eighth grade, and then went on to graduate from Cambridge High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and returned to the States in 1953.
He began working in the concrete business, laying blocks and finishing cement driveways, etc. In 1957, he started work for the State of Minnesota at the Cambridge Regional Center as the shipping and receiving supervisor. He retired in 1991.
In June 1957, Don married Elaine Dalchow of Princeton. They made their home in Bradford Township, where they raised three children. While working at CRS, he also spent many hours continuing his cement work and was very proud of all the basements and driveways he worked on.
Don and his wife were members of Long Lake Lutheran Church, where he served as sexton in charge of the cemetery. Besides mowing the cemetery lawn, he also was in charge of preparing the gravesites for funerals.
Don loved stock car racing and worked at the Princeton Speedway as flagman and official for many, many years. He was a lifetime member of the lsanti VFW Post and the Cambridge American Legion Post 290. He proudly served as a member of the Legion 290 Color Guard, and participated in parades, honor guard at funerals, school events, and wherever they were called.
Don was currently serving as the Post’s financial officer, and is also a past commander. He also served as Santa for the Legion’s children’s Christmas party.
He was an avid gardener and supplied his family and friends with the best sweet corn in Isanti County.
Don is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Cambridge; daughter Lorri and husband Ed Klajda of Cedarburg, Wisc.; daughter Julie and husband Bradley Clark of Isanti, and son Jeffrey and wife Roxanne (Bostrom) Mellin.
He is further survived by five grandchildren: Melissa and Eddie Klajda, Lee Mellin, and Jeremy and Chad Clark; sisters: Shirley Olson of Minneapolis, Donna Wallin of Cambridge, Dorothy Wallin of Spring Lake Park, Sonia and husband George Gardner of McGregor; Joyce and husband Rick Hebner of Houston, Texas; and Grace McGarvie and husband Brian Dieck of Plymouth; many loving nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Oscar Mellin; and a baby sister, Sharon Mellin.
