Sylvester D. Pokornowski

Sylvester D. Pokornowski, age 73 of Silver Lake, died Wednesday March 24, 2004 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born Dec. 17, 1930 in Hale Township, McLeod County, the son of Steven and Clara Mallak Pokornowski.

Sylvester was baptized at St. Adalbert’s Catholic Church in Silver Lake, and he attended District 80 country school in Hale Township.

Sylvester and Marcella Schermann were joined in holy marriage Aug. 18, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Silver Lake. God blessed their marriage with 10 children. Together they made their home on their farm in Silver Lake.

Sylvester honorably served his country in the United States Army.

He was a member of American Legion Post 141, Catholic Order of Foresters Court 1054, and Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake.

Sylvester is survived by his wife, Marcella; children: Lois (Glen) Posusta of Monticello, Roger (Kim) Pokornowski of Silver Lake, Carol Pokornowski of Cokato, Dale Pokornowski and Lori Kuras of Silver Lake, Janice (Dan) Konerza of Bay town, Texas; Joyce (Bert) Hallaway of Glencoe, Julie (Dean) Wendolek of Silver Lake, David (Tammy) Pokornowski of Silver Lake, and Paul (Tammi) Pokornowski of Cokato; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by his father-in-law, Frank Schermann of Glencoe; brothers, Francis (Bernie) Pokornowski of Cokato, and LeRoy (Judy) Pokornowski of Hutchinson; sisters, Delores (Sam) Shimanski of Silver Lake, and Rita (Vic) Beehler of Sandpoint, Idaho; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Pokornowski in 1981; his parents, Steven and Clara; and his mother-in-law, Anna Schermann.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sylvester Pokornowski was Saturday March 27, 10:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. The Rev. Robert J. Mraz was the celebrant. Alice Nowak was the organist.

Interment with military honors took place at St. Adalbert’s Cemetery in Silver Lake.

Visitation was Friday March 26, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake; and continued from 9 to 10:30 a.m. before the funeral service on Saturday. Prayer service was at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by an American Legion service at 8 p.m.

Eric Chap, Chad Pokornowski, Ryan Posusta, Dennis Cafferty, Darrell Kaczmarek, and Alan Pokornowski served as casketbearers.

The Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake served the family.
