Marie Ann Pokornowski, 90 obituary, 6/18/04


A Mass of Christian Burial for Marie Ann Pokornowski, 90, of rural Lester Prairie, was held on Friday, June 18, from Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. Officiating was the Rev. Robert J. Mraz.
Mrs. Pokornowski died on Monday, June 14, 2004, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
The organist was Val Shamla. “Ave Maria” was sung by soloist Alice Nowak. Congregational hymns included “Amazing Grace,” “Be Not Afraid” and “On Eagles’ Wings.”
Pallbearers were Victor Groe, John Baugus, Jim Baugus, Tom Pokonosky, Robin Wasko and Jonathan Posuta. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Marie Wasko was born on April 15, 1914, in Rich Valley Township, to Vincent “Jim” and Anna (Maresh) Wasko. She attended District 51 through eighth grade. Although she started high school, she had to quit and help with farming, because of her brother’s death.
Marie Wasko and John Pokornowski were legally separated after 20 years of marriage. The last 50 years she shared her home and life with her dear friend, Leonard Kohls.
Mrs. Pokornowski lived her entire life in Rich Valley Township. For most of those years, she engaged in farming. She also worked at a cafe in Glencoe, at Green Giant, Radtke Produce, for Radtke Catering where she was known as “the pie lady” and in accounting for Kohls’ Trucking.
She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. She also belonged to the Lester Prairie Senior Citizens, New Germany Senior Citizens and to a 500 card club.
Mrs. Pokornowski enjoyed playing cards, bingo, cooking and traveling to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud to be the great-grandmother of twins. She also helped raise her cousin, Wayne Kuras, for 16 years.
Survivors include her loving friend, Leonard Kohls of Lester Prairie; a son, Richard (Annette) Pokornowski of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Darlene (John) Baugus of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, John (Jill) Baugus Jr., Kathryn (Mike) Mangino and James (Carolyn) Baugus; a granddaughter-in-law, Fredricka Pokornowski; great-grandchildren, twinsTravis and Brittany Baugus, Oliver Baugus and Bennett Baugus and Jimmy Overcash; a brother, Bernard Wasko of Mobridge, S.D.; many other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Edward Wasko; and a grandson, Dr. Robert Pokornowski.
Arrangements were with the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake.
