Luella Martha Schuette obituary, 6/14/04


Luella Martha (Strey) Schuette, age 93 of Lester Prairie, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Luella was born March 20, 1911, in New Germany, the daughter of Herman and Emma (Parpart) Strey. She was baptized April 16, 1911, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hollywood Township by the Rev. T. Rolf; and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie June 1, 1924, by the Rev. A. Spleiss.
After graduating from Lester Prairie High School in 1929, Luella attended St. Cloud State Teachers College, St. Cloud, and received her education for teaching.
She taught in rural schools for seven years and often joked that “she had the duties of janitor, teacher, librarian, and principal.” She taught elementary school in Foley, Winsted, and Lester Prairie.
Luella was married to Albert Schuette at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Oct. 29, 1937, and became the stepmother of two girls, Shirley and Geraldine. The couple lived on a farm near Plato for a short time, before moving to a farm southeast of Lester Prairie.
Luella continued her education by attending evening, summer, and Saturday classes, and received her bachelor of science degree six months before her husband’s death in 1960.
Shortly after her husband’s death, Luella moved to a home in Lester Prairie.
She retired from teaching in 1976, at the age of 65, after teaching for 19 years at Lester Prairie Schools.
Since March 2004, Luella has been a resident of the Glencoe Regional Health Services long term care unit, where she entered her eternal rest at the age of 93 years, two months, and 24 days.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Geraldine Ernst of St. Louis Park; sisters-in-law Lydia Waldron of Glencoe, and Eleanora Strey of Hopkins; six step-grandsons: Michael, Patrick, and Todd Staber, and Gregory, Tom, and Doug Ernst; nieces Rosetta (Strey) Hennen and Arlys (Eggersgluess) Genin; nephews Earl Strey, Gene Eggersgluess, and Dale Strey; as well as other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Albert Schuette, Luella was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Emma Strey; four brothers: Marvin, Harold, Henry, and Art Strey; one sister, Elvira (Strey) Eggersgluess; one stepdaughter, Shirley (Schuette) Staber; and a niece, Joyce (Eggersgluess) Ranzau.
Funeral services were Thursday, June 17 at 2 p.m. at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. Herman Hannemann officiating.
Organist was Marie Eischens, and the congregational hymn was “In The Garden.” Soloist Donald Schuette sang “How Great Thou Art” and “On Eagle’s Wings.”
Serving as casketbearers were Earl Strey, Bob Hennen, Gene Eggersgluess, Dale Strey, Howard Schuette, and Clarence Tonn.
Interment was in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Lester Prairie.
Arrangements were by Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel, Lester Prairie.
