Maryann Slanga obituary, 8/23/04


Maryann Slanga, age 104 of Glencoe, and formerly of Silver Lake, died Monday Aug. 23, 2004 at the Glencoe Long Term Care Center. Prior to her death, Maryann was the oldest living person in McLeod County.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1900 in Hale Township, McLeod County, the daughter of Joseph and Sophie Swendra Grachek.
Maryann Grachek and Frank Slanga were joined in holy marriage Nov. 28, 1916 at St. Adalbert’s Polish Catholic Church in Silver Lake. Father Zalews’ was the celebrant at the wedding. God blessed their marriage with three children.
They made their home on the 120- acre family farm in Hale Township, and lived there until they retired. They then moved to Silver Lake.
Maryann was employed as a cook at St. Adalbert’s Catholic School and at Green Giant.
In 1992, she moved to Glencoe Long Term Care Center.
Maryann was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake, the Council of Catholic Women, Holy Rosary Society, Degree of Honor and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 141.
She also enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, cooking, quilting, and gardening.
Maryann is survived by her children: Elinore Gehlen of Monticello, Clara Fasching of Crystal, and Ernest (Helen) Slanga of Silver Lake; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, Nov. 23, 1973; her parents, Joseph and Sophie; brothers: Steve, Ed, Tom, and Frank Grachek; a sister, Albina; a sister-in-law, Martha Grachek; and sons-in-law, Matt and Leander.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. Father Robert J. Mraz was the celebrant. Alice Nowak was the organist.
Interment followed at St. Adalbert’s Cemetery.
A visitation took place Wednesday Aug. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake. A combined CCW and Rosary Society recited a rosary at 5 :30 p.m. An American Legion Auxiliary Service took place at 6:45 p.m.; a Degree of Honor service was at 7 p.m.; and parish prayers were at 7:30 p.m. Further visitation took place at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Ray and Gary Slanga, Kathleen Winter, and Jeffiey, Harry and Rita Bebo served as casket bearers.
The Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake served the family.
