Julius R. Stender, age 82 of Norwood Young America, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center, Waconia.
Julius was born Oct. 10, 1921, at Young America, the son of Julius and Louisa (Koplin) Stender. He was baptized Nov. 6. 1921, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Young America, by the Rev. J. F. Abraham, and confirmed April 1, 1935, at the same church, by the Rev. W. F. Kramer.
Julius was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army.
He married Gertrude C. Graupmann Aug. 27, 1956, at United Church of Christ in Perham, by the Rev. Melvin Graupmann.
Julius worked at Bongard’s Creamery for almost 20 years.
He was a member of the New Germany Legion Post, which stood guard at the funeral home.
Julius enjoyed spending many hours and weeks at the family cabin in Vergas. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing.
He smoked and pickled fish, and smoked turkeys.
Julius was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola (Mielke); parents Julius and Louise Stender; brothers Melvin, Lowell, LeRoy and Herbert Stender; sisters Lucille Zellmann and Lelah Menth.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude; children and spouses: Shelah and Bob Burandt of Waconia, Doug and Carol Stender of Fergus Falls, Lowell and Mary Stender of Young America, Tom Stender of Eden Prairie, Debby and Ron Miller of Waconia, Lynn and Jim Vos of Green Isle, Kim Stender of Eden Prairie, David Stender of Green Isle, Mike and Lisa Stender of Buffalo, and Julie Stender of Eden Prairie.
He is further survived by 18 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lucille Stender of Waconia, Lillian Stender of Eagle Bend, Margie Stender of Watertown, Bill and DeAnn Zellmann of Moose Lake, Bill and Alice Shimota of Green Isle, Ruth Roehlke of Eden Prairie, John and Bonnie Graupmann of Semmes, Ala.; Dolores Mielke of Seward, Neb.; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Benton Township, Cologne, with the Rev. Eric L. Zacharias officiating. Interment was at National Cemetery, Fort Snelling.
Casketbearers were Stan Stender, Larry Stender, Bill Zellman, Roger Stender, Allen Menth, and Jack Shimota.
Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home, Waconia.
