Joseph Louis 'Joe' Sterner
Joseph Louis “Joe” Sterner, age 78, of Winsted, and formerly of Waverly, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Oct. 18, 1925 near New Germany, Carver County, the son of Frank and Anna Schmidt Sterner.
Joseph and Corina C. Fasching were joined in holy matrimony July 21, 1948, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. God blessed their marriage with eight children.
Joe established Sterner Lighting and Sterner Industries. Through the years, his responsibilities included all of Sterner’s road crews and managing the business.
In 1984, he sold the business and began worldwide consulting. Joe traveled extensively and spent more than 2,000 hours on planes. He also had his own pilot’s license.
Joe was a master steamfitter and a certified welder. He taught steam- fitting at Hutchinson Technical College and Willmar Technical College, as well as to many employees of Sterner Lighting.
Joe belonged to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted and was a former longtime, faithful parish-ioner of The Church of St. Mary in Waverly.
He was a member and past president of the Waverly Lions Club, and a former scoutmaster for seven years.
He is survived by his children: David (Susan) Sterner of Gainesville, Fla., Jeff (Connie) Sterner, and Mike (Sandy) Sterner, all of Winsted; Gary (Vicki) Sterner of Waverly, Tom (Laura) Sterner, and Peggy (Rick) Borders, all of Howard Lake; Karen (Joel) Engel of Chaska, and Lynn (Charlie) Borrell of Waverly; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Joe is further suvived by his sisters and a brother: Marie Kehr of Sun City West, Ariz.; Diane (Brendan) Gallagher of Tacoma, Wash.; Janet (Louis) Becker of Rockford, Ill.; and Gerald (Veronica) Sterner of Victoria; very special friend Sylvia Artmann; a sister-in-law, Leona Sterner Hausladen; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Corina C. Sterner, Oct. 30, 2000; his parents, Frank and Anna; and by a brother, Leander.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph “Joe” Sterner was Monday, Aug. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. The Revs. Martin B. Shallbetter and Paul L. Wolf were the concelebrants. Harold Hanson sang “Ave Maria.” Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Friends called at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted Sunday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. A prayer service took place at 7:30 p.m.
Casketbearers were Brian and Todd Sterner, Thomas Borders, Jamie Newcombe, Leonard Foss, and Jake Pettit.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
