John Willliam Berg

John Willliam Berg, age 82 of Buffalo, and formerly of Howard Lake, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at Lake Ridge Care Center.

John was born Jan. 9, 1923 in Middleville Township, Wright County, to William O. “Bill” and Blanche Varner Berg. He was baptized and confirmed at Mount Hermon Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Annandale.

John graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1942. He continued to farm with his father after graduation.

He loved playing baseball during those early years with the Waverly Legion Team when they were runner-up for the state championship. John also pitched for the Howard Lake baseball town team.

John was united in marriage to Lucille Wren Oct. 9, 1946. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Robert and Stephen. Lucille passed away Nov. 26, 1964.

John began his own trucking business, which he continued to operate for approximately 25 years, then sold farm machinery for a time for Moorhead Implement.

John was joined in marriage to Betty Omtvedt Christiansen Oct. 21, 1977. John and Betty lived on Buffalo Lake, where they spent many wonderful years. Three years ago, they happily celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

John began driving school bus for Howard Lake School District 880 many years ago. How John enjoyed telling of his experiences with the kids who rode on his bus! He eventually retired from the position as manager of school buses for District 880.

In his retirement years, John continued working as a salesperson for Rausch Brothers Monuments.

John loved life, people, and was so very proud of his family!

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 27-1/2 years, Betty J. (Omtvedt Christiansen) Berg; sons Bob (Cindi) Berg, and Steve (Trudy) Berg, all of Howard Lake; grandchildren: Tami Berg, Tiranda (Bob) Pipo, Tracie (Nathan) Hawkinson, Trevor Berg, Timothy Berg, Jessica Wade Verde, Jammie Remer, Jesse Berg, and Kelly (Chad) Burau; and eight great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by sisters Mary (Will) Westphal of Baxter, and Betty Lehtola of Cokato; step children Victoria Westfall, Dale (Pam) Christiansen, Lee Christiansen, and Alix Christian; step grandchildren Shelby (Jordan) Rowan, Danae Christiansen, Jared Christiansen, and Abby Westfall; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many other relatives and friends; and his dog, “GiGi.”

In addition to his first wife, Lucille, John was also preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Blanche Berg; and by a brother-in-law, Don Lehtola.

Funeral services were Friday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake. The Revs. Myra Carroll-Pezzella and Philip Geoffrion, Chaplain 1, officiated. Interment followed at Highland Lutheran Cemetery in Middleville Township, Wright County.

The organist for the funeral service was Patricia Munson. Soloist Albert Lorentz sang “Beyond The Sunset” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “Softly and Tenderly” and “Abide With Me.”

Friends called Thursday, April 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Honorary casket bearers were Ron Hessler, Joe Cafferty, and Chris Remer.

Casket bearers were Trevor Berg, Timothy Berg, Jesse Berg, Jared Christiansen, Robert Pipo, and Nathan Hawkinson.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
