Johanna Magdalena Bowman

Johanna Magdalena Bowman, age 96 of Delano, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at her home.

Services were conducted at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Delano, Friday, April 8, with interment in Mt. Olive East Cemetery, Delano.

Johanna was born Dec. 1, 1908, at the family homestead in Turner County, Marion Junction, S.D. to Carl and Maria (Beyrow) Ahrendt. On her sixth birthday, her family moved to Canistota, S.D. The day after her high school graduation, they moved to Luverne.

Jo met Lawrence M. Bowman at a movie dance in Hardwick; they were married May 12, 1934. Lawrence and Jo lived with her parents and cared for them until their deaths.

They began farming in March 1943 in Rock County. Their children, Carl, Jennalee, Lawrence D., and Rosalyn were born while the family lived in Rock County. Deciding to relocate, they bought a farm at Lyndale, rural Maple Plain.

Moving to Delano in 1967, Lawrence and Jo had 10 more years together before Lawrence passed away Nov. 29, 1977.

For many years, Jo had an opportunity to do seasonal work, helping to make wreaths for Butterfields, which was more fun than work for her.

She continued living in Delano and enjoyed an active life until April, 1999 when, because of health problems, she agreed to make her home with the Bersie family.

Besides her parents and husband, Johanna was preceded in death by six brothers; six sisters; parents-in-law; five brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; daughter-in-law, Darlene Bowman; and son-in-law, Gordon Bersie.

Survivors include her children: Carl (Dorothy) Bowman, of Buffalo, Jennalee Bersie of Delano, Lawrence D. Bowman of Annandale, and Rosalyn Jo (Gary) Nelson of Yakima, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren: Valerie (Mark) Pederson, Grant (Diane) Bowman, Greg (Sarah) Bersie, Krisann (Steve) Grinnell, Mark (Mindy) Bersie; Stephanie (David) Huttner, David (Cindy) Bowman, Derek (Rhonda) Nelson, Nathan (Chris) Nelson, Nicholas (Layci) Nelson, and Jillian Nelson.

Jo is further survived by 17 great-grandchildren: Charissa, Anastasia, and Luke Pederson, Jordan and Michaela Bowman, Lauren and Colette Bersie, Megan (Kevin) Danielson, Jannah (Ryan) Wittwer, Caryn Grinnell, Madeline, Benjamin and Joshua Bersie, Ellie and Luke Huttner, Andrew and Joseph Bowman, and one great-great grandchild due in October; two sisters-in law Viola Correll of Luverne, and Margaret Bowman of Slayton; nieces; nephews; and friends.

Grandma Jo’s wonderful wit, the thought of her wonderful homemade food, her cozy afghans, and the warmth of her smile will live in our hearts forever. Auf Wiedersehn, dear Mom.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
