Meta V. Buhr

Funeral services celebrating the life of Meta V. Buhr, age 83 of Lester Prairie were Tuesday, Feb. 1, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Meta died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005 at the St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

Meta Vendelein Buhr was born March 26, 1921 in Young America Township, the daughter of John and Martha (Ahlbrect) Haag. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Evangelical Reformed Church of Peace in Snapsburg (rural Norwood).

Meta was united in marriage to Roy Buhr April 14, 1940 at Zion Ev. Reformed Church of Peace by the Rev. Zehrer. The couple made their home on an 80-acre farm south of Hutchinson.

Three years later, they moved to LeSueur, where they also lived for three years. In 1946, Roy and Meta moved back to Hutchinson, where they farmed 20 acres until 1961, when they moved to a 140-acre farm in Mayer.

In 1975, the couple moved to Lester Prairie, where Meta lived until March of 2004, when she entered St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

Meta enjoyed her animals on the farm, where she was almost like a doctor to them. She also liked to travel to Pennsylvania and Texas to visit family.

Meta’s biggest enjoyment in life were her children, grandchildren, other family and friends.

Meta was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Haag; husband Roy Buhr; son Gary Buhr; sons-in-law Henry Hlavka Jr. and Bill Schmidt; brothers John Haag, Hilary Haag, Herbert Haag, Vernon Haag, and Maynard Haag; and sisters Della Smoldt, Lydia Buckentin, Gladys Dudrey, and Clara Haag.

She is survived by her children: John Buhr of Lester Prairie, Eugene Buhr (wife Oona) of Hanover, Penn.; Roger Buhr of Mayer, Lanette Hlavka of Oak Grove, Jeffrey Buhr (wife Nada) of Woodlands, Texas; and Samuel Buhr (wife Nancy) of Winsted; grandchildren: Eugene Buhr Jr. (wife Sandy), Deedra Noel (husband Joe), Justine Smith (husband Joe), Robert Hlavka, Jaquline Haasl (husband Brian), Eric Hlavka, Brandon Buhr, Courtney Buhr, Hannah Buhr, Jessie Buhr, Messena Smude (husband Todd) and Tobias Buhr (wife Anita).

Meta is further survived by step-grandchildren Alex and Maddie Spanos; great-grandchildren Zachary, Kaylyn and Carly Noel; Jared and Owen Buhr, Brianna, Nicolle and Jordan Smith; Cody Hlavka, Leighton Buhr, Dalton, Chase and Kylie Hoese; and Mckayla Smude; sisters-in-law Lucille Haag of Green Isle, and Anna Haag of Pine River; special friend Fred Kellermann of Mayer; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Officiating at the 2 p.m. funeral service was the Rev. Eric Nelson. The organist was Jane Holasek, and the congregational hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” “Children Of The Heavenly Father,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Just As I Am.” Interment was in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lester Prairie.

Visitation was Monday evening, Jan. 31 at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.

Serving as casket bearers were Eugene Buhr Jr., Brandon Buhr, Robert Hlavka, Eric Hlavka, Jessie Buhr, and Tobias Buhr. Honorary casket bearers were Deedra Noel, Justine Smith, Jaquline Haasl, Courtney Buhr, Hannah Buhr, and Messena Smude.

Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
