William Donald “Don” Douglas
William Donald “Don” Douglas, age 94 of Winsted, and formerly of Montrose, Waverly, and Cokato, died Sunday, April 10, 2005 at St. Mary’s Care Center, Winsted.
Don was born in Montrose March 27, 1911, the oldest child of Wilmot and Annie (Mumm) Douglas. He attended school in Montrose, graduating from Montrose High School in 1929.
He was married to Katherine Louise Tuckey July 3, 1929.
Don and Katherine began their lifelong career of farming north of Montrose, moved to six other farming locations in Wright County over the years, and then moved to Tipperary Farm, Waverly, Nov. 1, 1943. Don and Katherine lived at Tipperary Farm until 1997, when they moved to Edgewood Gables in Cokato.
A very progressive dairy farmer, in 1951, Don had the fourth milking parlor in the state of Minnesota. He really enjoyed having his children show his Holsteins for 10 years at local and state level. In 1951, one of his cows was state 4-H champion.
Don and Katherine spent 17 winters at their home in Mesa, Ariz. They also enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Florida, New York, California, Mexico, Canada, and going on an Alaskan cruise. They went on several dairy trips.
Don made friends easily wherever he went. He will be remembered for being friendly, charming, and generous. He was a real role model to his children, grandchildren, and everyone he came in contact with. Don dearly loved his family and friends.
He was active in Farm Bureau, and a member of the Soil and Water Conservation board in Wright County for many years.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Katherine; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Chandler Davis; father and mother Wilmot and Annie Douglas; brother David Douglas; brothers-in-law Richard Buch and Oscar Esala; nephew Kenneth Buch; sister-in-law Margaret (Tuckey) Roach; brother-in-law Ed Roach; brother-in-law Loring Tuckey; sister-in-law Mildred Tuckey; and mother- and father-in-law Wallace and Amelia Tuckey.
He is survived by his children: Shirley (Roger) Setterberg of Willmar, and Ralph (Mary) Douglas of Delano; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Don is further survived by sisters Margaret Esala of Alexandria, and Mary Buch of Delano; sister-in-law Anne Douglas of Buffalo; brother- and sister-in-law Albert and Abbie Picha of Minnetonka, and 11 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Friday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Montrose, the home church for five generations of the Douglas family. Pastors Elizabeth Hadler and Marvin Repinski officiated at the funeral service.Interment was at Kreidler Cemetery.
Friends called at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo Thursday, April 14 from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
