Berneice Elizabeth Eddy
Berneice Elizabeth (Greenslit) Eddy, age 100 of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005.
She was born Oct. 11, 1904 in Morton to John and Ethel (Morse) Greenslit.
Berneice received her elementary and secondary education at Morton, but left home to study a year at Winona State College and a year at Mankato Teacher’s College, where she earned her degree in elementary education.
She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in North Redwood, near Redwood Falls; Round Lake, then in Howard Lake.
While in Howard Lake, Berneice met and married Paul Eddy. This union took place Dec. 3, 1929 at Berneice’s parent’s home in Morton. The couple made their home in Howard Lake, where Berneice resided until her most recent move to the Good Samaritan Center in 2001.
Berneice was very involved in her community and civic organizations. Along with being a teacher, she coached girls’ basketball.
She was a member of many organizations including Walker United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion Wars Auxiliary, Wright County Women’s Club, Garden Club of Howard Lake, Eastern Star of Howard Lake and Cokato, PTA of Howard Lake, Waverly, and Winsted; Wright County Historical Society, and Middleville Historical Society.
Berneice is survived by her son, John Paul (Betty) Eddy of Denton, Texas; grandchildren Mark (Carol) Eddy of Eugene, Ore.; Merri (David) Blow of Hickory Creek, Texas; Matthew (Robyn) Eddy of Eugene, Ore.; and Michael (Kelly) Eddy of Carrolton, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren: Hannah, Jordan, Becca, Sarah, Emma, Jacob, Rachel, and Carter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, Stanley Charles Eddy.
Berneice’s smile, wit, wisdom, and vibrant personality will be missed by all. Memorials are preferred to Walker United Methodist Church, Howard Lake; Morton United Methodist Church, Morton; First United Methodist Church of Denton, Texas; Salvation Army Corp. of Denton, Texas; and the Good Samaritan Care Center in Howard Lake.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at Walker United Methodist Church with Pastor Robert Kopp officiating. Music was by Mae Beth Wannarka and Bonnie Seegmiller. Interment was in Howard Lake City Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Polly Eddy O’Brien, Betty Banke Koenig, Leon Greenslit, Avie Greenslit, Dr. Thomas Eddy, Dr. James Eddy, Gerald Gilmer, Sydney Stenberg, and Kay Stenberg.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
