Otto Gerald Gruenhagen
Otto Gerald Gruenhagen, age 83 of Howard Lake, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005 at the Hutchinson hospital.
He was born Dec. 15, 1921 near Howard Lake, the son of Otto and Lillian (Glenz) Gruenhagen. A life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, Otto was baptized Jan. 18, 1922 by the Rev. A. L. Oetjen, and confirmed in his faith April 16, 1935 by the Rev. C. G. Seltz.
Otto was united in marriage to Dorothy Carlen Feb. 26, 1954 at St. James Lutheran by the Rev. Theo. Melinat. They were blessed with six children and made their home and their living on the Gruenhagen family farm north of Howard Lake.
Otto farmed his entire life until retirement. He was also employed for about 25 years as a heavy equipment mechanic.
He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 49 union. He served as an elder and was a member of the men’s morning Bible study group at St. James Lutheran Church.
Several years ago, Otto and Dorothy moved to an apartment at Cokato Manor. Recently, Dorothy moved to Burns Manor at Hutchinson.
Otto was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Lillian Gruenhagen; son Dwight Carlen; son-in-law Jerry Hugo; brother Kenny Gruenhagen; infant granddaughter Angela Carlen; and infant great-granddaughter Amelia Feigum.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Hutchinson; children Barb (and Don) Lambert of Riverton, Wyo.; Gerald (and Connie) Gruenhagen of Howard Lake, Kathy (and Les) Steffes of St. Cloud; Susie (and Joe) Snyder of St. Cloud, and Janet Hugo (and fiancée Tim LePage) of Dassel.
Otto is further survived by his daughter-in-law, Janet (and Mike) Ewert of South Haven; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 2 at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Marge Stueven was the soloist and Nancy Butterfass served as the organist. Interment followed at the Howard Lake City Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, and continued one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday at the church. A prayer service took place at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Pallbearers were Otto’s grandson Joe Carlen; son-in-law Don Lambert, grandson Calvin Hugo, son-in-law Les Steffes, son-in-law Joe Snyder, and friend Bob Berg.
Honorary pallbearers were also grandsons Derek Steffes, Chet Snyder, and Matthew Gruenhagen.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake served the family.
