Gladys Lena Hickman

Gladys Lena Hickman, age 79 of Montrose, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005.

Gladys was born Sept. 16, 1925 in Armour, S.D., the daughter of John and Lydia (Kirchenel) Huber. She was baptized Nov. 15, 1925 by the Rev. Herbert Stahnke at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Armour, and confirmed in her faith at the same church July 28, 1940.

Gladys was united in marriage to Clement Hickman Dec. 6, 1945 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo by the Rev. E. R. Berwald. Their marriage was blessed with four children.

They lived in Armour, S.D. for the first years of their marriage, and upon moving to Minnesota, made their home in Montrose.

Gladys was active in the Montrose VFW Post 1901 Auxiliary, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and homemaking.

She was employed as a waitress at the Brookfield Country Club in Golden Valley.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lydia Huber; husband Clement Hickman; two brothers, Vernie Huber and Reinhold Huber; and two grandsons, John DeMarais and Robbie Hickman.

She is survived by her children: Cherry DeMarais of Howard Lake, Barbara Terning of St. Cloud, Dwayne (Patty) Hickman of Clearwater, and Phyllis (Gordon) Faust of Afton, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gladys is further survived by two sisters, Elsie Wagner of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ella (Earl) Riswold of Baltic, S.D.; two brothers, Ernest Huber of Magrath, and Delbert (Jane) Huber of Paynesville; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Bruce Karels, Jason Schwartz, Jim Wagner, Dennis DeMarais, David Lynch, and Dan Stokes.

Honorary pallbearers were Greg Hickman, Stephen Weidler, Devin DeMarais, Nathan Terning, and Gordon Faust III.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 29 at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Nancy Butterfass served as the organist. Interment was in the church cemetery in Howard Lake.

The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake served the family.
