Carol Jean Hjelmeland

Carol Jean Hjelmeland, age 57 of Buffalo, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 at the Buffalo hospital.

She was born May 15, 1947 in Watertown, the daughter of Anthony and Catherine Roth Murphy.

Carol graduated from Watertown High School in 1965, and later graduated from St. Cloud State Teachers College.

Carol and Steven Odvar Hjelmeland were joined in holy marriage June 13, 1970 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. God blessed their marriage with two children, Shawn and Stefanie.

Carol taught second grade in Buffalo School District 877 for six years, prior to becoming a homemaker and raising her two lovely children.

Through the years, she was involved with the Wright County Republican Party.

She loved all kinds of flowers, especially those with beautiful fragrances. Carol also enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques.

Carol was a faithful member of the Church of St. Francis in Buffalo.

She is survived by her loving husband, Steven Odvar Hjelmeland; two children: Shawn Hjelmeland of Cottage Grove, and Stefanie Hjelmeland of Fridley; her mother, Catherine Murphy of Watertown; brothers and a sister, Anthony (Wilma) Murphy of Pasadena, Calif.; Michael (Marlene) Murphy of Montrose, and Mary Ann (Todd) Wandersee of Watertown; her father-in-law, Odvar (Velda) Hjelmeland of Cokato; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her father, Anthony Murphy; her mother-in-law, Lois Knutson Hjelmeland; and by her loving friend, Linnea Mills.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, March 4 at 4 p.m. at the Church of St. Francis in Buffalo, with Father Tom Rayer as the celebrant.

Friends called Thursday, March 3 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. A prayer service took place at 7:30 p.m.

Interment is today, March 7, at noon at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
