Mary Irene Horstmann
Mary Irene Horstmann, age 82 of Winsted, went to heaven on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2005 at her residence.
She was born June 5, 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of John R. and Elizabeth Donahue Snyder.
Mary grew up in the Rochester area. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1941.
She then went on to nursing school, and graduated as a registered nurse (R.N.), receiving her diploma from the Mayo Clinic.
She worked as a private duty nurse in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area, and was also employed at St. Mary’s Hospital & Home in Winsted, the Elim Nursing Home in Watertown, and the Brownton Clinic.
Mary and Joseph P. Horstmann were joined in holy marriage May 2, 1946 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester. God blessed their marriage with nine children.
Mary had a loving personality and was always willing to help others. Her inquisitive nature helped her excel in a variety of areas.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading, art, poetry, music, and traveling.
Travels included a trip in 1984, which included the Holy Land, China, India, and other countries. She went to Rome in 1991, and had the privilege of shaking Pope John Paul’s hand in St. Peter’s Square.
Mary was a faithful, lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. She prayed for and promoted perpetual adoration most of her life.
She was also a secular Franciscan of the Fraternity of St. Mary’s in Shakopee, and a member of Epiphany Prayer Group.
Mary is survived by her children: Jerome J. Horstmann of Winsted, Mary Jean Horstmann of Waconia, James M. Horstmann of San Diego, Calif., Francis P. Horstmann of St. Cloud, Maria D. (Charles) Mathews of Glencoe, and Thomas G. (Mary Jo) Horstmann of Winsted; grandchildren: Joseph Horstmann, Starrla (Scott) Cray, Sarah, and Chad Mathews; Rose Sullivan; Ryan and Kristin Horstmann, and other grandchildren; great-grandchildren: Kevin, Caleb, and Frank, and other great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna of Oregon; a sister-in-law Lorraine of Washington; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Horstmann; an infant son, Isadora; two sons, Joseph and Robert; her parents; and by a brother, Robert Snyder.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Mary Jo Horstmann was the reader for the Mass, and Lavon Kielkucki was the organist. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Visitation took place Thursday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.
Honorary casket bearers were her grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Jerome J. Horstmann, Mary Jean Horstmann, Francis P. Horstmann, Maria D. and Charles Mathews, and Thomas G. Horstmann.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
