Lyle W. Leaf
Lyle W. Leaf, age 72 of Watertown, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005 at his home in Watertown.
He was born Feb. 19, 1933 to C. Edwin and Bertha (Lenz) Leaf in Franklin Township. A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown, Lyle was baptized June 1, 1933 by the Rev. Le Vander, and confirmed May 23, 1948 by the Rev. Anderson.
Lyle was united in marriage to Phyllis G. Schuette June 14, 1956. This union was blessed with three daughters.
Lyle served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958, when he was honorably discharged and released from service.
Lyle loved farming, and he and Phyllis farmed just north of Watertown on his parents’ farm, until he was stricken with severe rheumatoid arthritis and was forced to retire and settle in town.
He survived over 30 different surgeries during his lifetime, and still remained cheerful, always having a smile.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, C. Edwin and Bertha Leaf; brothers Stanley and Grace Leaf, and Calvin Leaf; sisters Gayle and Allen Quaas, Delores and Roy Quaas, and June and Clarence Socher; parents-in-law Edward and Anna Schuette; and brothers-in-law Willmar Guetzkow, Melvin Hensel, and Kenneth “Short” Schuette.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Phyllis; daughters Sharyl and Warren Schultz, Bonnie and John Sadergaski, and Becky Leaf; and grandchildren Tiffany and Chris Munoz, Calvin Schultz, Sam Schultz, Whitney Sadergaski, and Sidney Sadergaski.
Lyle is further survived by brother Emery and Norma Leaf; sister Hallie Hensel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Joy Leaf, Delbert and Erna Schuette, Darlene and Robert Neisen, and Eldoras and Myron Schuette; faithful friend John; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Memorial services were Thursday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown, with the Rev. Robert Ericson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends took place Wednesday afternoon and evening, Aug. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service; and continued Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church, prior to the services.
Honorary casket bearers were Mark Leaf, Duane Guetzkow, Craig Guetzkow, Jim Neisen, Michael Schuette, and Dean Schuette.
Arrangements were by the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home.
