Marie Maude Montgomery
Marie Maude Montgomery, age 91 of Cokato, and formerly of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005 at the Cokato Manor.
She was born April 10, 1914 in Mora, to Karl and Maud (Gordon) Marcy. Marie’s mother passed away when she was about two years old, and the six children in the family were split up. Marie went to live with her Aunt Olive Bushnell in Iroquis, S.D. At age three, she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Ritter of Iroquis.
Marie grew up and attended school in Iroquis, graduating with the class of 1931 from Iroquis High School. She then moved to Howard Lake and attended Cokato Normal Teacher’s Training.
Marie taught for six years at District 32, near Delano. During this time, she made friends with and lived with Leonard and Lena Mielke of Montrose. Marie was baptized at the Mielke home.
One June 29, 1938, Marie married Joseph Montgomery at the Leonard Mielke home, with the Rev. Clifford Channer of the Howard Lake Presbyterian Church officiating. To this union, four children were born.
The couple made their home on a dairy farm southwest of Howard Lake.
In 1958, Marie purchased Klucas Clothing store in Howard Lake, and operated it as Montgomery Clothing for 18 years, before retiring in 1976.
Marie was a member of the Howard Lake Presbyterian Church since 1938, a Sunday school teacher, and was very active following the influence of her mother-in-law.
She enjoyed craftwork.
Marie is survived by her children, Rev. Dr. Gerald (Ruth) Montgomery of Lakewood, Wash.; Janet (Bernard) Finnigan of Burr Ridge, Ill.; Marilyn (Boyd) Carlson of Hutchinson, and Marjorie (John) Barth of Elk River; 11 grandchildren: Lisa (Richard) Adamson, Eric (Kim) Montgomery, Michael (Laura) Finnigan, Darren Carlson, Kari (Dave) Pankratz, Brian (Sonja) Carlson, Ryan (Laurie) Barth, Lucas (Renae) Barth, Adam Barth, and Jonathon Barth; and eight great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her birth parents; adoptive parents; husband; granddaughter Denise DuBois; three brothers, Merrill Gordon and two who died immediately after their birth, Earl and Leroy; and four sisters, Ethel, Gladys, Mabel and Grace.
Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake with the Rev. Myra Carroll-Pezzella officiating. Music was provided by Pat Munson and Al Lorentz. Interment was in the Howard Lake City Cemetery.
Casket bearers were, Eric Montomery, Darren Carlson, Mike Finnigan, Ryan Barth.
Honorary casket bearers were Lisa Adamson, Denise DuBois (deceased), Kari Pankratz, Brian Carlson, Lucas Barth, Adam Barth, and Jonathan Barth.
Arrangements were by Swanson Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake and Cokato.
