John William Otto
John William Otto, age 94 of Brainerd, formerly of Delano, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Brainerd.
He was born March 25, 1911 to Joseph and Elizabeth (Passon) Otto in Independence. John was baptized, made his first communion, and was confirmed at St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano.
He attended St. Peter’s School and graduated valedictorian in 1925.
John was united in marriage to Florence H. Polingo May 14, 1935.
In 1940, John and Florence moved the family homestead to the farm, where they engaged in dairy farming until 1974. John was also employed by Advance Machine in Spring Park as a maintenance man.
John and Florence sold the farm in 1974, and moved to a home on Eagle Lake in Brainerd. There, they joined St Joseph Catholic Church in Deerwood.
John was a member of the St. Anthony Society in Delano for 78 years, a member of St. Peter Catholic Church for 65 years, and School Board Clerk of District 79 for many years.
John truly loved his wife, family, church, farming, the outdoors, fixing things, helping others, fishing, snowmobiling, his gardens, playing cards, and visits with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Otto; his sisters, Louise Zabel and Dolores Fenney; and an infant son.
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Florence; children Jim and Karen Otto, Richard and Seda Otto, Helen and Bob Jude, Ed and Wendy Otto, and Robert and Carole Otto; 19 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. at the St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano. The Rev. Michael Miller officiated, with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Delano.
Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano, and continued from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church on Friday, prior to the Mass.
Casket bearers were John’s grandsons, John Otto, Steve Otto, Michael Otto, Brian Otto, Robert Jude, William Jude, Brent Jude, Paul Otto, Ted Otto, and David Otto.
Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
