John Andrew Parten
John Andrew Parten, age 83 ofWinsted, died Friday morning, Sept. 30 at his residence.
He was born Oct. 27, 1921 in Mahnomen, the son of Harold and Dagne (Reiten) Parten.
John graduated from Verdi High School in 1941.
He honorably served his country in the US Army during WW II in the parachute infantry. John was awarded a Purple Heart.
Following military service, John attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.
John A. Parten and Hazel C. Nicholsen were joined in holy marriage Sept. 22, 1949, in Redwood Falls.
John was employed by Honeywell Electric, and was a longtime proprietor of Parten Electric in Winsted.
A faithful member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted, John wired the new church building when it was constructed.
He also belonged to American Legion Post 407 in Winsted, and was a life member of V.F.W. Babcock Post 5555 in Richfield.
Through the years, John enjoyed fishing, golfing, and dancing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Hazel C. Parten; sisters-in-law Helen Parten and Signe Ellgin; nephews and nieces, Harold (Cindy) Parten, Robert “Bob” (Katie) Parten, Jerry (Nancy) Parten, Arlene (Bryan) DeSchepper, Harold Nicholsen, Hans (Linda) Nicholsen, Ralph (Sandi) Nicholsen, Annette Dressen, Julie Ann (Dave) Hefflinger; Nancy (Brad) Olson; Judy and Joyce Ellgin, Dorothy Yokum, Carol Karels and Marilyn Bankard; grand nieces and grand nephews; caregivers John Holzeu and Amy Lyle; and other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Dagne; his stepmother, Minnie; a brother, Fernald “Skip” Parten; a sister, Arlene Holden; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Holden.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted with the Rev. Gerald L. Boldt officiated. Sharon Pingree was the organist. Soloist Bruce Gatz sang “On Eagles’ Wings” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “Abide with Me.”
Interment with military rites took place Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Friends called Monday, Oct. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. An American Legion Ritual took place at 6:45 p.m.. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Casket bearers were Harold, Bob, Jerry, Matt, and Andy Parten, and Hans and Ralph Nicholsen.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
