Russell Ervin Pettit
Russell Ervin Pettit, age 77 of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005 at his home.
He was born July 22, 1927 in Stockholm Township, Wright County, the son of Paul E. and Ollie G. (Bogart) Pettit. He was baptized at the Church of Christ in Howard Lake Dec. 10, 1939, and confirmed in his faith Dec. 8, 1946 at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake.
Russell married M. LaMae Pettit Oct. 26, 1946. They were lifelong residents of Howard Lake, where they raised their 10 children.
Russell was employed by Shepperd Motor Co., and in 1960, opened an insurance agency, which he operated until his retirement in 1995. For a number of years, he also drove special needs children to area schools.
An active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Russell served as congregation president, an elder, and on various boards. He was faithful in his study of the Bible, attending regular and special Bible class groups. Researching the Bible and discussing Christianity were activities he enjoyed.
During World War II, Russell served his country in the Coast Guard. He also served as commander of American Legion Post 145, where he was an active member.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, David.
He is survived by his wife, LaMae; and their children: sons and their families, James (Jan), Matthew, Jamie, and Annie; Jonathan (Dorothy), Josie, Jake, J.J., Jane, and Josef; Jerry (Lynette), Ryan and Andrea; Joel (Kristen), Valerie and David; Jeffrey (Connie), Alex and Olivia; Jay, Chelsea and Cassandra; Daniel (Barbara), Eryn and Allyson; and Jesse (Michelle); and daughters, Mary and Melissa.
Russell is further survived by five great-grandchildren; brothers Paul (Jan) and Leslie (Kathy); brother-in-law Joe (Judy) Shepperd; sister-in-law Marge (Neil) Stueven; aunts; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Special music was provided by Valerie (Pettit) Johnson with Nancy Butterfass serving as accompanist and organist. Interment followed at St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., and continued one hour prior to service at church.
Serving as pallbearers were Ryan Pettit, Matthew Pettit, Jake Pettit, David Pettit, J. J. Pettit, Alex Pettit, and Josef Pettit.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake served the family.
