Gladys Elvina Pettit
Gladys Elvina (Rudquist) Pettit, age 83 of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
She was born April 9, 1922 on the family farm in Knapp Township to Hjalmer and Helen (Peterson) Rudquist. She was a lifelong member of North Crow River Lutheran Church, rural Cokato, where she was confirmed in faith.
Gladys married Bedford “Spike” Pettit April 13, 1940 . Together, they raised three children: Rodney, Beverly, and David.
They spent their first years together in the Cokato, Dassel area.
Gladys was employed by Johnson Produce, and Northland Canning Company, and also had various housekeeping jobs.
In 1949, they moved to Minneapolis, where she was employed by Fannie Farmer Candies, along with being a homemaker.
In 1956, the family moved back to the Cokato, Howard Lake area, where they operated a dairy farm and also had a partnership in a firm in the Twin Cities.
They retired to a home at Lake Washington in Dassel in 1976, where they lived until Spike’s death in 1990.
In 1992, Gladys moved to Howard Lake, where she resided until recently.
Gladys was a devoted Christian wife, mother, and grandmother (nanny). She had great compassion for all birds and animals, big and small. This included a pet crow and a wild turkey. Chickens where her favorite of all, and she had a very large collection of ceramic chickens and roosters.
She enjoyed planting flowers and family fishing trips, listening to music, which consisted of polka and religious songs; and cooking. Gladys was an excellent cook and no one ever left her house hungry.
She will be dearly missed.
Gladys is survived by her children, Rodney (Jeanne) Pettit, Dave (Karen) Pettit, and Bev (Jim) Polt; sisters Dorothy (Kermit) Johnson, Myrtle Luhman, Minnie Ackerblade, Delores (Frank) Kerola and Vera Sandberg; grandchildren Stephanie and Derrek; and sister-in-law Lorraine Hall.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Spike, parents Hjalmer and Helen Rudquist; her brother, Melvin; brother-in-laws Gordon Sandberg and Hubert Luhman; mother- and father-in-law Cyrus and Anna Pettit; sisters- and brothers-in-law Edna and Harry Hawkins, Bill and Adeline Tuey, Stuart and Florence Pettit, Leland and Dorothy Pettit; Art and Lillian Pettit; Paul and Ollie Pettit; William Hall; Ethel and Jacob Glessing, and Grace and Steven Evinski.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at North Crow River Lutheran Church, Cokato, with the Rev. Michael Nelson officiating. Music was by Barb Root, Tom and Barb Schmieg, and Sue Madison. Interment followed at Cokato City Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Jay Evjen, Galen Johnson, Glen Pettit, Leland Pettit, David Sandberg, and Gene Ring.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home, Cokato and Howard Lake.
