Hildegard Gustina Polzin

Hildegard Gustina Polzin, age 94 of Cokato, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 at Good Samaritan Care Center, Howard Lake.

She was born Oct. 21, 1911 in New Auburn, the daughter of Fred and Emilie (Winter) Grack. Hilda was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, New Auburn, by the Rev. A. D. Hoyer; and confirmed in her faith April 5, 1925 at Emmanuel Lutheran, New Auburn by the Rev. H. Diemer.

Hilda was united in marriage to Herbert Polzin Sept. 24, 1930 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Auburn, by the Rev. Hans Werner. This union was blessed with nine children.

Hilda loved music. She played the organ at her church when she was just 14 years old, and enjoyed playing hymns for various church meetings throughout her life.

While her children were growing up, Hilda taught Sunday school for 20 years. After moving to Cokato, the family joined St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, where Hilda became active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, making quilts for world relief with the Naomi Guild, and enjoying the monthly meetings for seniors.

Her hobbies included sewing, embroidery, gardening, taking care of flowers, cooking, and baking.

After a brief stay in the hospital, Hilda recently entered the Good Samaritan Care Center in Howard Lake for a time of recuperation.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Emilie Grack; husband Herbert; her brothers and sisters; two sons, Wilmar and Darrel; and one grandson, Gregory Polzin.

Hilda is survived by her remaining children: Verdella (Robert) Biehl, DeLaine (Raymond) Anderson, Lois (Darryl) Hanson, Wallace (MaryAnne) Polzin, Karen (Albert) Dorweiler, Mary Alice (Donald) Gobely, and David (Jeannie) Polzin; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Nancy Butterfass was the organist, with special music by the LWML ladies’ choir and Hilda’s grandsons, Michael, Bryan, and Aaron Polzin. Interment was in the Howard Lake City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Marcel Polzin, James Anderson, Lynette Hirsch, Daniel Hanson, Jeffrey Polzin, Steven Dorweiler, Thomas Gobely, and Michael Polzin.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
