Donald John Roufs
Donald John Roufs, age 87 of Winsted, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
He was born Oct. 29, 1917 in Winsted, the son of Edward and Catherine Schlagel Roufs.
Donald was raised in Winsted, and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in June of 1935.
He enlisted in the armed services Nov. 28, 1940, and served until June 28, 1945. He was a member of Red Bulls Cannon Co. 168th Infantry.
After service, he met Afra A. Lueck of Winsted Township, and they were married April 25, 1951 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. God blessed their marriage with 12 children.
Donald and his brother, Leverne, owned and operated the Winsted Food Market for 23 years. After closing the store, Donald went to work for Sterner Industries until his retirement.
Following retirement, Donald went on to hunt, fish, and travel with his wife of 53 years.
He was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 407, and the Winsted Sportsmen’s Club, where he taught gun training for 23 years.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Afra A. Roufs; and 11 children: Donna (Charlie) Atkinson of Thonotosassa, Fla.; Steven (Cindy) Roufs of Winsted, Edward (Lois) Roufs of Waconia, Jerome Roufs of Howard Lake, Francis (Vicki) Roufs of Winsted, Susan Winter of Brooklyn Park, Leo Roufs of Brainerd, Willy Roufs, and Carol (Jeff) Quast, all of Howard Lake; Michael (Linda) Roufs of Webb City, Mo., and Alan (Sue) Roufs of Cologne.
He is further survived by 17 grandchildren: Craig Atkinson, Rebecca Roufs, Hannah Roufs, Tracy Roufs, Courtney Roufs, Garrett Winter, Shana Burfeind, Heidi Roufs, Cory Roufs, Katie Roufs, Jason Quast, Rachael Quast, Samantha Roufs, Janel Roufs, Julia Roufs, Kristin Roufs, and Benjamin Roufs; and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Catherine Burfeind, and Vivian Atkinson.
In addition, Donald is survived by his brother, Leverne (Rosemary) Roufs of Bemidji; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Mary Ann (Ardner) Fasching of New Hope, Marcia (Russell) Haugen of St. Paul, John (Charlene) Lueck of Winsted, and Alice Lueck of Glencoe; many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by a loving son, Darryl; his parents, Edward and Catherine Roufs; and a brother, Darril Roufs.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. The Rev. Paul L. Wolf was the celebrant, and Lavon Kielkucki was the organist. Interment with military rites followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Friends called Monday, Jan. 17 from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. An American Legion Ritual took place at 7 p.m., followed by a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Casket bearers were Craig Atkinson, Tracy Roufs, Garrett Winter, Heidi Roufs, Cory Roufs, Jason Quast, Rachael Quast, and Samantha Roufs.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
