Ronald Jack Salo obituary, 12/10/05


Ronald Jack Salo, age 71 of Cokato, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
He was born Sept. 7, 1934 in Kettle River, to Jacob and Gertrude (Maatta) Salo. Ron grew up on a farm in Kalevala Township, north of Kettle River, where he attended Kalevala Elementary School. He graduated from Barnum High School with the class of 1953.
While in high school, Ron was crowned homecoming king and was captain of the football team. He also participated in basketball.
Ron served his country in the US Army from 1956 to 1958. He was stationed in Germany, working as a radio engineer.
Following his discharge from the army, Ron worked at the Kettle River Creamery.
Ron was married to Margaret Brink Aug. 6, 1960 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Moose Lake. The couple made their home in Mora, while Ron attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned an associate degree.
Ron went to work at Gorham Plumbing and Heating in Mora, then to Land O’ Lakes in Brainerd.
In 1966, the family moved to Pine City, where Ron worked at Production Credit Association in the ag finance department.
The family moved to Stewart in 1972, where Ron was employed at the 1st State Bank of Stewart. In 1979, they moved to Cokato, where Ron worked at the State Bank of Cokato, retiring from there in 2000.
Following retirement, Ron sold real estate for a time and also drove bus for Cokato Transportation.
He enjoyed gardening and working on his lawn.
Ron was a member of the Cokato-Dassel Rotary, Cokato Chamber of Commerce, and the Cokato Corn Carnival Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter Deb (Jeff) O’Brien of Belle Plaine, and son Mark (Joanne) Salo of Minnetonka; grandchildren Mandy (Brad) Carlson, Tony O’Brien, Kyle O’Brien, Dylan O’Brien, Keagan Salo, and Jack Salo; sister Phyllis Wuori, and sisters-in-law Nina Salo and Muriel Brink.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harold, Willard, and Donald; brother-in-law Matt Wuori; and sister-in-law Mary Ann Salo.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cokato with the Rev. Steve Thorson officiating. Music was provided by Karen Anderson and Mark Salo. Interment was in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetary in Cokato.
Casket bearers were J. David Anderson, Bruce Johnson, Gary Martens, Randy Paul, Don Peroutka, and Nick Wuori. Honorary casket bearers were Cokato Transportation bus drivers: Greg Holt, Darlene Larson, Amanda Zeidler, James Saari, Francis Pokornowski, Gary Schmieg, Mary Amborn, Orlin Doering, Paul Fredricks, Bernie Funk, Rachel Danberg, Dave Forsberg, Jim Anderson, Tim Benoit, Mitch Holt, Burton Horsch, Sandy Narr, Curt Sanborn, Norb Schindele, Steve Stahl, Sue Tschimperle, Stanley Dahlman, Chris Kittock, and Dana Pettit.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Cokato.
