Ortwin Carl Schmidt obituary, 7/12/05


Ortwin Carl Schmidt, age 84, of Minnetonka, and formerly of Lester Prairie, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at the Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.
Ortwin was born Dec. 14, 1920 at home in Winsted Township, the son of Herman and Elsie (Hedtke) Schmidt. He was baptized Jan. 2, 1921, and later confirmed into the faith April 14, 1935 by the Rev. W. L. Ernst in Hollywood.
Ortwin was united in marriage to Lorna Klaustermeier April 28, 1943 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. The couple made their home on the family farm.
Ortwin farmed for over 50 years. He enjoyed custom combining for surrounding farmers and continued to do this even after selling his farm in 1986.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his family – especially his four grandsons. Ortwin also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.
He was reserved and very content with playing cards, eating a well-cooked meal, and watching a ball game on television.
Although he dealt with pain on a daily basis, he always managed a smile. He will be greatly missed by his family and close friends, as well as loved and remembered for teaching the values of patience and honesty.
After moving off the family farm, Ortwin moved into Lester Prairie. In 1998, be moved to West View Acres in Waconia, and in 2004, he moved to Beacon Hill, an assisted living facility in Minnetonka.
Ortwin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son Richard; and sister Pauline.
He is survived by three daughters: Barbara Dammann (husband Milan) of Lester Prairie, Beverly Krueger (husband Paul) of Shorewood, and Janet Skogen (husband Rick) of Brainerd; grandsons Sean Krueger of Mound, Patrick Krueger of Shore-wood, Matthew Skogen of Vadnais Heights, and Joshua Skogen of St. Paul.
Ortwin is further survived by sisters Evelyn Strei of Lester Prairie and Dorothy Ernst (husband Stanley) of Lester Prairie; brothers-in-law Walter Klaustermeier (wife Jean) and Carl Klaustermeier (wife Carol), all of Lester Prairie; as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Friday, July 15 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating. The organist was Marsha Christenson and the congregational hymns were “Rock Of Ages,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation took place prior to services at church.
Serving as casket bearers were Sean Krueger, Patrick Krueger, Matthew Skogen, Joshua Skogen, Gary Ernst, and James Klaustermeier.
Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
