Sister M. Louis (Mary Angela Stifter) obituary, 6/30/05


Sister M. Louis (Mary Angela Stifter), CSC, age 82 of Notre Dame, Ind., and formerly of Winsted, died Thursday, June 30, 2005.
She was born July 23, 1922 in Winsted, the seventh of 10 children of the late Louis and Amanda Sherman Stifter.
After receiving her early education at Holy Trinity School, she entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1946, and became a student nurse at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Ill., graduating in 1952.
She passed the state board exam for nurses and remained as a staff nurse at the Cairo hospital for one year. Alternating nursing assignments between St. Mary’s Hospital/Infirmary in Cairo, and Saint Mary’s Convent, Notre Dame, Ind., Sister spent a total of 21 years in Cairo, and three years at Saint Mary’s Convent.
In 1973, Sister switched her profession to pastoral care and spent 23 years in hospitals of the congregation including St. Agnes Hospital and Holy Cross Medical Center, both in California; Holy Cross Hospital in Utah; and the Wynhoven Health Care Center in Louisiana.
Ill health in 1997 brought Sister Louis to Marian Convent, Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, where she remained active in community affairs and was a member of the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Reception of the Body was Tuesday, July 5 at 9 a.m. at Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m.
Arrangements were by the Kaniewski Funeral Home.
