Leonard M. Swanson obituary, 5/16/05


Leonard M. Swanson, age 72 of Watertown, died Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born July 14, 1932 to Martin and Laura (Howe) Swanson in Glencoe. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational Church in Glencoe.
Leonard enlisted in the United States Army Oct. 8, 1951 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged Nov. 7, 1957 at the rank of sergeant.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Bening May 23, 1953 at First Lutheran Church in Glencoe.
Leonard was known as Mister Fix-it for cars, bikes, and anything else he could get his hands on. He thoroughly enjoyed every minute of his tinkering.
Early in Leonard’s working career, he served as a police officer in Watertown, Minnetrista, and Mound, as well as assisting the Carver County Safety Patrol.
Leonard was a devoted family man. He loved spending time with his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Laura (Howe) Swanson; granddaughter Lisa Lawrence; and sisters Loretta Johnson, Delores Lobitz, and Lola Peterson.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn; sons Michael and Carolina Swanson, Bruce and Debbie Swanson, and Kevin and Judy Swanson; daughters Cindy Swanson and Denny Clowes, and Michelle and Chris Gydesen; 11 grandchildren: Xue, Julie, James, Jill, Kristy, Tim, David, Jim, John, Rachel, and Henry; and five great-grandchildren: Kelly, Rachel, Zack, Luke, and Lydia.
Leonard is further survived by sisters Lillian Mielke, Gloria Swanson, and Joycelyn Swanson.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Paul Krentz officiating.
Visitation was Wednesday evening, May 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home, and continued Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Arrangements were by the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home.
