Helga Sophia Swanson, 100, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at Covenant Village, Westminster, Colo.
Services were conducted Dec. 12 at Lake Jennie Covenant Church, rural Dassel, with the Rev. Douglas Pierce officiating. Music was by Elisabeth Schmieg, Sarah Swanson and Nancy Lindquist, with accompanists, Lorane Peterson, Diane Blackwood and Nancy Larson. Tributes and remembrances were by Wesley Swanson and family. Interment was at Lake Jennie Covenant Cemetery.
Helga Sophia Anderson was born Nov. 4, 1905, to Alfred Nicoloi and Clara Anderson in a log cabin in northern Minnesota. In her later youth, the family moved to Graettinger, Iowa, and also resided for a time in Jacksonville, Fla. She attended grade school in Minnesota and Iowa, and graduated from a business program at Minnehaha Academy, Minneapolis, as valedictorian.
She married Clarence Ragnar Swanson on July 13, 1929, at 25th Avenue Free Church, Minneapolis. Following marriage, the couple ministered together in 15 Covenant churches: four circuit churches at Little Falls, Lake Jennie twice; Helena, Mont., Harris-Rush City, Poplar Wis., Oberlin, Kan., Shenendoah, Iowa; Lund, Wis., Lowry and LeSueur.
The couple retired in Dassel. However, since 1979 Helga had resided at Covenant Manor, Minneapolis, and at Covenant Village, Westminster.
As a pastor’s wife, she directed choirs, played guitar, sang in string bands, served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher, lead Covenant Women auxiliary, and lead youth groups.
Survivors include sons, the Rev. Wesley (Carolyn) of Williams Bay, Wis., and John (Nancy) of Ormond Beach, Fla; eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982 and by 10 brothers and sisters.
