Sidney J. Widmer obituary, 8/11/05


Sidney J. Widmer, age 85 of St. Bonifacius, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005 at Elim Home in Watertown.
He was born Nov. 2, 1919 in Minnetrista to John H. and Margaret R. (Fick) Widmer. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in St. Bonifacius.
Sidney served in the Army infantry in WW II.
He was united in marriage to Edith Stober April 22, 1950 at St. Nicklaus Catholic Church in Graben, Germany.
Sidney was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Aid Society, of which he was president for over 20 years. He was a charter member of the St. Bonifacius Knights of Columbus.
In addition, Sidney was a charter member of the St. Bonifacius American Legion, and served as adjutant for the Legion for 23 years. He was also a member of the Waconia VFW.
Sidney served on the Watertown School District 111 school board for 19 years. He was a board member of the Waconia Creamery, and was a land surveyor for the Hennepin County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Widmer; brothers and sisters-in-law John Widmer, Jerome and Isobel Widmer, and Norman and Annabelle Widmer; and brother-in-law Francis (Bud) Wandschneider.
He is survived by his loving wife, Edie; children and spouses: Roman and Jeanine Widmer of Howard Lake, Hubert and Denice Widmer, Ralph and Mary Widmer, Rosita and Glen Schroers, all of Watertown; and Hans and Deborah Widmer of St. Louis Park; 17 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Sidney is further survived by brothers and sisters Harold (Margaret) Widmer of Bongards, Carl (Joanna) Widmer of Spring Park, Elaine Wandschneider of St. Paul, Francis and Janet Widmer of Robbinsdale, Fritz and Jane Widmer of Cologne, and Marv and Donald Klein of Waconia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Hans and Sigrid Stober of Linkenheim, Germany; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, Aug. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in St. Bonifacius. The Rev. Joseph Gallatin was the celebrant. Interment was at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in St. Bonifacius.
Casketbearers were Sidney’s grandchildren: Jason Widmer, John Widmer, Jeremy Gatz, Brad Widmer, Sidney Widmer II, Rachel Widmer, Anne Widmer, and Angela Malz.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home, Waconia.
