Dorothy Elizabeth Zellmann

Funeral services celebrating the life of Dorothy Elizabeth Zellmann, age 78 of Lester Prairie, were Saturday Dec. 31, 2005 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

Dorothy died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born Dec. 20, 1927 in Bergen Township, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Adams) Tonn. Dorothy was baptized, and later confirmed into the faith, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. Vomhof.

She attended St. Peter parochial school.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Auren Zellmann April 2, 1945 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

The couple owned and operated Prairie Liquors of Lester Prairie.

Over the years, Dorothy also held employment at Alice Haney Nursing Home, 3M, Green Giant in Winsted and Glencoe, Hands Inc., and Medallion Kitchen, as well as other places.

She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, driving her car to local garage sales, auctions, the sales barn, and wherever bingo was played. She even taught a few people how to drive.

Her hobbies included embroidering, refinishing and upholstering furniture, cooking large meals, and having card parties.

She was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and a chaperone for the Lester Prairie senior class trip of 1957 and 1963 to the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Dorothy enjoyed outdoor activities from camping and fishing to coon hunting and snowmobiling. She entertained many children and families with her small pasture of sheep, chickens, ducks, and geese. Some days, you may have even seen a horse or cow.

She was a volunteer without an organization, always ready to help people – especially the ones that were shunned by others. She opened her car door and her home to many of them, helped them find work, and even went as far as buying a family a home to live in.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister Alice Zellmann; and brothers-in-law Byron Zellmann and Wally Wolff.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Ehrke (husband Stan) of Lester Prairie; son Joel Zellmann (wife: Lisa) of Silver Lake; grandsons Sheldon Ehrke (wife Lori) of Glencoe, and Brandon Zellmann, Danny Zellmann, and Auren Zellmann, all of Silver Lake; and great-grandsons Shane Ehrke, Tyler Ehrke, and Cole Ehrke.

Dorothy is further survived by brother Louis Tonn of Elephant Butte, N.M.; sisters-in-law Maxine Almquist of Lester Prairie and Elvira Wolff of Norwood Young America; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Officiating at the 10:30 a.m. funeral service was the Rev. Eric Nelson. The organist was Marcia Christenson. Soloist Marvin Westermann sang “Railroad To Heaven.” The congregational hymns were “Jesus Loves Me,” “Jesus Lead Thou On.” “Abide With Me,” and “Just As I Am.” Interment was in the church cemetery.

Visitation took place Friday evening at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.

Serving as casket bearers were Chad Kerkvliet, Neil Kerkvliet, Frank Kerkvliet, Lamott Schultz, Don Anderson, and Swanny Landin.

Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
