Laila Florence Benson
Laila Florence Maikkula Benson, age 90, of Dassel, formerly of Minneapolis, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home.
A funeral service took place Monday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Dassel, with the Rev. Orval Wirkkala officiating. Music was provided by organist Barb Root, soloist Lynnette Schroeder, and a duet by Glenna and Rick Vandergon. Interment was at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Kingston.
Visitation was one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.
Casket bearers were Jerry Maikkula, Gene Nelson, Larry Trout, Rick Vandergon, Josh Vandergon, Matt Vangergon, Dennis Isaacson, and Jim Schroeder.
Laila was born Aug. 29, 1915 in Kingston, the daughter of Abe and Laura (Erickson) Maikkula. She grew up in the Dassel area, attending elementary school in Kingston, and high school in Dassel.
Laila was baptized and confirmed at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Kingston. She had also been a member of a church in Minneapolis before it disbanded.
Growing up in a large family, Laila enjoyed playing games with her younger siblings. She enjoyed cards, music, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. She had a very special relationship with her brother, George.
Laila married Vangel Benson in Kingston, and together they made their home in Minneapolis.
Employed by the Blackburn Company, Laila retired after many years of faithful employment. As her health began to fail, she and her brother, George, moved to an apartment in St. Cloud, where they lived until they moved to the Dassel Lakeside Community Home, where they resided for the past two years,
In addition to her brother, George, of Dassel, Laila is survived by a sister, Pearl Haapajoki of Bagley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mildred Trout, Violet Wuollet, and Ruth Nelson; and brothers Ray Maikkula and Robert Maikkula.
