Jeanette Evelyn Carlson obituary, 8/2/06


Funeral services celebrating the life of Jeanette Evelyn Louise Carlson, age 94, of Glencoe, and formerly of Dassel and Litchfield, were Monday, Aug. 7 at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Jeanette died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006 at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
She was born May 15, 1912, in Rockford, Ill., the daughter of John and Nannie (Erlandsson) Nelson. Jeanette was baptized Dec. 29, 1912 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, Ill., by the Rev. J. E. Heindaal; and later confirmed into the faith May 16, 1926 at the same church by the Rev. Solomonson. She grew up in Rockford, and graduated from Rockford High School.
Jeanette was united in marriage to Rev. Walter E. Carlson June 11, 1940, also at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, Ill., by the Rev. Knock. The couple moved to Minnesota, where they lived in Warren, Moorhead, Dassel, and Litchfield, where Walter preached. They retired in Litchfield, and then moved to Glencoe in 1992.
Jeanette sang in the church choir as an alto, and was a substitute organist. She took part in many Bible study groups and was a circle member.
Her hobby was to bake Swedish rye bread, cardamon bread, Swedish rice pudding, and Swedish ice box cookies. She enjoyed knitting baby booties for every baby born in her church, and caps for babies born at the Glencoe hospital.
Jeannette liked to do crossword puzzles, play Scrabble, Tri-ominoes, and Rumikube games; and she grew roses for the garden show in Dassel. Although she never learned to drive, she traveled to the West Coast, and to Sweden, and was also a “snowbird,” going south to Arizona for about 10 winters.
Jeanette loved to spend time visiting and taking care of her family; and she acted as hostess for the many visitors that came to their home to visit her husband, who was a pastor and synod bishop for 37 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Nannie; husband, Walter; daughter, Janet Carlson; brother and sister-in-law, Archie and Charlotte Nelson; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Ernest Johnson; and sister-in-law Nancy Nelson.
Jeanette is surived by her daughters, Louise Carlson of Glencoe, and Miriam Lowrie (husband Dan) of Salem, Ore.; grandson, Jed Lowrie of Wilmington, Del.; sisters Clarice Nelson, and Adelyn Carlson (husband Bertil), all of Rockford, Ill.; brother C. Burton Nelson of Rockford, Ill.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The Rev. Kristi Schiroo officiated at the 11 a.m. funeral service. The pianist was Twyla Kirkeby, and the soloist was Justin Rierson, who sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “Day By Day,” “Children Of The Heavenly Father,” “Blessed Assurance,” and “Thine Is the Glory.” Interment was in the Dassel Cemetery.
Serving as casket bearers were Dan Lowrie, Jed Lowrie, Gary Colden, Dale Pagel, Dennis Roisum, and Don Tifft.
Visitation took place one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements were by the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
