Clayton Olaf Gulstad
Clayton Olaf Gulstad, age 70, of Northome, Minn., died Monday, May 8, 2006 at Nielson Place in Bemidji.
He was born Sept. 7, 1935 in Bottineau, N.D., the son of Olaf and Josephine (Nuland) Gulstad. Clayton was baptized at the age of three, and confirmed at the age of 14 into the Lutheran church.
He attended rural schools and graduated from Bottineau High School in 1954 as valedictorian of his senior class. He continued his education, taking night and Saturday classes at the University of Minnesota for years after he was married, had family, and was working full-time.
Clayton married Lorine Aug. 3, 1957 at Norway Lutheran Church in rural North Dakota. They lived in Minneapolis and Coon Rapids for 16 years, where Clay worked for General Mills as a technician in the flour mills and later, at James Ford Bell Research Center in Golden Valley.
They then lived in LeSueur for 18 years, where Clayton was employed by Green Giant as product development supervisor, and at Pillsbury as section manager, and later as research scientist.
He retired at age 55, due to a stroke he had at age 52, and moved to Island Lake, near Northome, where he enjoyed the peace and quite of the Northwoods.
Clay enjoyed water skiing, camping, fishing, hunting, trapping, bowling, reading, gardening, and spending time with his family.
He was an active member in the church, wherever he lived, serving on the church council, Boys Brigade, vacation Bible school, and as an usher. He and his wife have 13 godchildren.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen Gulstad.
He is survived by his wife, Lorine, of Northome; three sons, Bradley (Ann) Gulstad of Prior Lake, Troy Gulstad of New Prague, and Douglas (Geri) Gulstad of Montrose; seven grandchildren, Jacob Gulstad, Annalise Gulstad, and Benjamin Gulstad, all of Prior Lake; and Amanda Gulstad, Linnea Gulstad, Hannah Gulstad, and Kaitlin Gulstad, all of Montrose.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Northome with the Rev. Roy Johnson officiating. Visitation took place one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Northome.
Pallbearers were Christopher Gulstad, Dean Gulstad, Bill Gulstad, Darwin Moen, Galen Best, and Ronald Best.
Honorary pallbearers were Rita Gulstad, Rebecca Gulstad, Katrina Gulstad, Joanne Gulstad, Gary Korogi, and Michael Korogi.
Arrangements were by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck.
