Catherine “Katie” Cecelia Hertzog

Catherine “Katie” Cecelia Hertzog, age 65, of Winsted, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 at her residence.

She was born Sept. 21, 1941 in Waverly, the daughter of Roy and Ann (Vaughn) Demarais.

Katie graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Waverly in 1960.

She was united in holy marriage with Clifford J. Hertzog Sept. 30, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with two sons: John and Ron.

While residing in the Winsted area, Katie was employed at Holy Trinity School in Winsted, at Keating Hardware for 18 years as bookkeeper and clerk, and at Littfin Hardware for five years. Katie and Cliff also owned and operated the Little Bake Shop in Winsted for several years.

Katie enjoyed family, especially her grandson, Connor; friends, the cabin on Woman Lake near Longville, and wintering in Mesa, Ariz. She was an avid bowler, and enjoyed crafts, playing cards, bingo, and being “Grandma Katie.”

She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 305 in Waverly.

Katie is survived by her loving husband, Clifford J. “Cliff” Hertzog; sons John Hertzog and Ron (Leanne) Hertzog, all of Winsted; grandson Connor Hertzog of Winsted; and sisters and brothers, Mary Tomlan of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Donna (Richard) Ditty of Walker, Bill (Pat) Demarais of Waverly, Peggy (Gene) Vogelgesang of Rosemount, Anna (Joe) Tinsley of Ontario, Calif., and Bernie (Dennis) Vadner of Silver Bay.

She is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Orville Hendrickson, Myra Munstenteiger, Beverly Demarais, Bert (Sharon Pingree) Hertzog, Terri Hertzog Wiederholt, and Mary (Tim) Purcell; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ann Demarais; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Linus and Magdalen Hertzog; a sister, Shirley Hendrickson; brothers Gerald and Donald Demarais; and two brothers-in-law, Reggie Hertzog and John “Chuck” Tomlan.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. Father Timothy Cloutier was the celebrant. Special music was provided by St. Mary’s Choir and also by Bruce Gatz. Gift bearers were Brenda, Dawn, and Kim Demarais, Mary Beth Vogelgesang, and Penny Sinkel. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Casket bearers were John Demarais, Dean Demarais, David Demarais, Rick Ditty, Greg Hendrickson, and Paul Vogelgesang.

Katie’s nieces and nephews were honorary casket bearers.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
