Benhard “Ben” Hummel
Benhard “Ben” Hummel, age 64, of Winsted, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006 at his residence, of heart failure.
He was born at home Feb. 7, 1942 in Trail City, S.D., the son of John and Katherine Gefroh Hummel.
Ben enlisted in the Marine Corps and honorably served his country from 1964 to 1968. He fought in the Vietnam War, obtained the rank of staff sergeant, and was honorably discharged.
Ben attended Barber College in Sioux Falls from 1968 to 1969. While living there, he met and fell in love with Jean Ann Zimmermann. They were joined in holy marriage Sept. 13, 1969 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls. God blessed their marriage with two children.
Ben worked as a barber in Eureka, S.D. until 1974, when he moved to Minnesota.
He was employed at Lester Building Systems for 30 years, where he worked in the maintenance department, and received several awards for innovative and cost-saving ideas.
A faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, Ben’s faith in God was central in his life, and he found his comfort in prayer.
His favorite activity was spending time with his loved ones. Ben’s sense of humor and giving heart will always be remembered. He was beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Ben is survived by his loving wife, Jean A. Hummel; son Steve (Cathy) Hummel of New Prague; daughter Tracee Hummel of Minneapolis; and grandchildren Bree Lindsoe, Katie Hummel, Noah Hummel, Ann-Marie Hummel, and Libby Hummel.
He is further survived by brothers Walter Hummel of Mobridge, S.D., Francis Hummel of Trail City, S.D., John (Phyllis) Hummel of Lester Prairie, and Aloys (Becky) Hummel of Springfield, Mo.; sisters Helen (Jim) Dashel of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jenny (Gary) Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa, Irene (Alan) Kuckelburg of Aberdeen, S.D., Angie (Donald) Thiemann, and Marlene (Robert) Kritzeck, both of Howard Lake; mother-in-law Celeste Zimmermann of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elaine Bolan; a brother, Marcus Hummel; father-in-law Arthur Zimmermann; a nephew, Christopher Zimmermann; and a niece, Casey Kritzeck.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. The Rev. Paul L. Wolf was the celebrant. Interment with military rites followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Friends called Monday, Aug. 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. A prayer service took place at 7:30 p.m.
Honorary casket bearers were Ben’s five grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Don Mulloy, Gary Johnson, Jim Thiemann, Bill Hummel, Pat Zimmermann, and Elrick Daily.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
