Nancy Rarity McWherter

Nancy Rarity McWherter, age 86, of Dassel, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006 at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

She was born March 25, 1919 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the daughter of George and Agnes (Melrose) Rarity. She grew up and attended school in Scotland.

At the age of 17, Nancy emigrated to the United States with her family, and settled in the Chicago, Ill.area.

Nancy was united in marriage to Donald Claud McWherter. Together, they made their home in the Chicago area, where they raised their children. During the summers, they would vacation in the Mille Lacs and the Hill City area in Minnesota.

In 1969, Nancy and Donald moved the family to the Dassel area, where Nancy has resided since.

A hard worker, Nancy worked for Douglas Aircraft as a riveter on the US Air Force’s C47 during World War II.

After the war, she worked for Motorola Corporation in the manufacturing of Radar equipment, and as a nurses aid at a Chicago hospital.

After moving to the Dassel area, Nancy worked for Richwell Furniture in Cokato as an upholsterer. She was also employed at Midwest Hatchery and Burke Manufacturing in Dassel, and at the 3M plant in Hutchinson, where she was employed for over 12 years

Nancy loved playing the piano and the organ. She enjoyed taking time to fish, garden, and go camping, and watching birds, animals, and children. She loved to spend time with family and friends, and could converse on any subject. Nancy will be deeply missed by family and friends.

She is survived by her children, David (Karen) Rarity of Bartlett, Ill.; Dawn (Larry) Caswell of Dassel, Susan Bollman (Mike Quast) of Winsted, Donald McWherter (Miriam Swanson) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ron (Gerri) McWherter of Dassel; five grandchildren, Rochelle Bollman, Ryan Bollman, Jesse McWherter, Devin McWherter, and Dillon McWherter; and one brother, David Rarity of Valparaiso, Ind.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; and two sisters, Ella Purcell and Helen Luchs.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel in Dassel with the Rev. Joel Swedberg officiating. Music was provided by organist Florine Osness, and soloist Joan Benson.

Visitation took place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service.

Casket bearers were Jesse McWherter, Devin McWherter, Dillon McWherter, and Ryan Bollman.

Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
