William Jacob Myllykangas

William Jacob Myllykangas, age 92, of Dassel, formerly of Kingston, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home.

He was born Oct. 12, 1913 in Kingston Township, the son of Jacob and Emma (Hemmi) Myllykangas. William grew up in the Kingston area, where he attended district school.

He worked as an electrician for the Rural Electric Company when it first began in the early 1920s.

In October 1941, William was inducted into the US Armed Service for the duration of World War II, being separated from the service in August 1945.

After his tour of duty, William owned and operated Myllykangas Gravel until his retirement in 1976.

William was united in marriage to Marion K. Johnson Oct. 12, 1949, in French Lake Township. Together, they made their home in the Kingston area.

William loved to spend time with family and friends. At the age of 72, he bought a pair of figure skates and taught his granddaughter how to skate on Lake Francis.

He enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, threshing bees, and socializing with family and friends, often traveling over 100 miles a day to visit. He was a very good handyman, and loved to tinker with his lawn mower.

William is survived by his son, Steve Myllykangas of Kingston; two grandchildren, Luke (Christy) Myllykangas, and Lindy Soderberg (special friend Kent Rorick); three great-grandchildren, Collin Soderberg, Maddilyn Soderberg, and Ava Myllykangas; a brother, Earl Myllykangas of Arlington, Wash.; and two sisters, Mildred Hendrickson and Elina Salmela, both of Dassel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; his parents; three brothers, Roy, Ed, and David; and three sisters, Elma, Marcella and Sylvia.

The funeral service took place Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Kingston, with Pastor Orval Wirkkala officiating. Music included a congregational hymn “Amazing Grace,” and a solo sung by Tayna Aho. The organist was Beth Wirkkala. Interment was at the church cemetery, with military honors provided by the Johnson-Kelly American Legion in Kingston.

Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel; and continued for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Casket bearers were Dan Myllykangas, Dave, Myllykangas, Bill Myllykangas, Wally Strand, Clifford Johnson, and Dean Hendrickson.

Arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
