Lona Jane Nelson
Lona Jane Nelson, age 71 of Dassel, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006 at her home.
A memorial service took place Thursday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel with the Revs. John Peterson and Steven Olson officiating. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” Soloist Thomas Johnson sang “In The Garden,” and pianist was Lynda Petserson. Inurnment followed at the Dassel Cemetery.
A time to gather with the family took place Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel; and continued for one hour prior to the memorial service Thursday at the church.
Lona was born July 18, 1934 in Greenleaf Township, McLeod County, the daughter of Paul and Adeline (Kern) Beach. She was baptized and confirmed, and was a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel at the time of her death.
Lona was united in marriage to Joseph Nelson Sept. 5, 1964 at Gethsemane Lutheran (First Lutheran) Church in Dassel. Together they made their home in Cokato for a few years, before moving to rural Dassel.
Lona and Joe lived in Dassel for the past 27 years, where Lona enjoyed many hours tending to her garden. She recently made plans to add a waterfall to her marvelous flower garden.
She enoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, camping, fishing, sewing, knitting, and canning, and was a wonderful cook. Lona will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph, of Dassel; children: Brad Nelson, William Nelson, both of Dassel; Robert (Amy) Nelson of Litchfield; Jerad Nelson, Julie (Jeff) Holtz, all also of Dassel; and Janeen McDonell (special friend Dennis Linden) of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren: Dylan Holtz, Katie McDonell, Andrea Nelson, Mitchell Larson, Devan Nelson, Aric Nelson, Logan Nelson, and Gavin Nelson.
Lona is further survived by two brothers, Norman (June) Beach of Hutchinson, and Horace (Sonja) Beach of Omaha, Neb.
Lona was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandchildren, Joseph and Jeremy Holtz.
Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
