Helen Caroline Nyman obituary, 6/16/06


Helen Caroline (Hanson) Nyman, age 89, of Dassel, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at the Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home.
She was born April 1, 1917 in Collinwood Township, Meeker County, the daughter of August and Mathilda Hanson. Helen grew up in the Collinwood Township area, where she attended country school for her education.
Helen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel at the time of her death.
She was an active member of the Gethsemane Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (W/ELCA) circles, helping with many events over the years.
Helen was united in marriage to Carl Nyman Feb. 19, 1938 in Minneapolis. Together, they made their home in Ellsworth Township until 1962, when they moved to a farm in Collinwood Township. There, they farmed and worked the land until their retirement.
For many years, Helen also was employed as a waitress for many of the local cafés, including the Log Cabin Café, the Coffee Cup Café, and the Bungalow Inn.
Helen loved to spend time with her family and friends. She always had a special joy for the times that she could spoil her grandchildren, whether it was taking them camping in the pickup camper, or watching them scamper around the farm.
She enjoyed gardening, weaving rugs, and crocheting doilies. Helen also spent many hours at the Dassel Senior Citizens Center over the years. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Helen is survived by her daughter-in-law, Gayle Anderson of Dassel; two grandchildren, Troy (Laura Fox) Anderson of Savage, and Renee (Gary) Friauf of Lake Lillian; four great-grandchildren, Jayden Friauf, Adam Fox, Sophia Anderson, and McKenna Friauf; and two sisters, Lenora (Lee) Anderson of Brainerd and Ruth Sibernagel of Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; and her son, Ronald.
Funeral services were Monday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel, with the Revs. Steven Olson and John Peterson officiating. Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Nearer My God To Thee.” Soloist was Ralph Berg, and the organist was Florine Osness. Interment was in the Dassel Cemetery.
Visitation took place Sunday evening, June 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel; and continued for one hour prior to the service Monday.
Casket bearers were Allan Nyman, Larry Ardolf, Ralph Berg, Mark Dallmann, Galen Nyman, and John Nyman.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
